Confirming 95octane is recommended for 540i (UK)
Picking up my 540i on Saturday, confirming fuel for it. Sure I've read it takes 91-98 octane but 95 recommended.
Not worried about any potential performance benefits 98 may offer (I'm not going to notice anyway)but in the case of BP, there are some claimed benefits as regards cleaning. http://www.bp.com/en_au/australia/pr...-unleaded.html What fuel are people using on their 540i s? If I remember correctly, I think my E39 530i BMW recommended 98 octane back then. Just curious. Aware this may trigger a big debate about these fuels... |

Applies to my 535i, with the N55 engine. For my car, "BMW recommends the use of RON 95 super unleaded petrol." Also states RON 95 on the filler cover. Performance data states, "output and consumption figures apply to RON 98 fuel". Nothing wrong with using RON 95, sensors adjust to run on the lower octane. As BMW used to say in the days of the E39; "Can be run on fuel down to RON 91 with a slight decrease in engine power and an increase in fuel consumption". From my own experience, RON 98 in the N55 optimises performance. For one thing, notice better mid range torque in normal driving. Better economy if you don't use the full performance. Users of the B58 are saying RON 98 gives a noticeable edge on performance. |

I will be using Sainsbury 97 in mine when it arrives, I have used this in all the "M" cars I've owned with no problems.

There is always an interesting debate around standard vs premium fuel. With my new 540 arriving soon I'm genuinely not sure what I'm going to do. On the one hand in normal driving 95 fuel will be totally fine I'm sure, but then again if I'm spending the thick end of £50k on a car it would surely make sense to run it on the best fuel possible... I'm always a little sceptical about the marketing around so called premium fuel but then there are credible studies that show a benefit. I'm leaning towards going with 98 fuel, but still not 100% sure. Got about 3.5 weeks to make my mind up!!

I've used RON 95 only once, it was in the middle of a long journey and the drop in performance was easily noticable.
Not sure if it has anything to do with it but this was afer installing MPPSK

Sound is great, just the right tone and loudness i was hoping for. Besides that, improved throttle response, mid range punch and pulling really hard till redline transform the car.
