A BBC news article that I read last night reflected allegations from EU and German anti-trust regulators that BMW has been operating in a cartel with VW, Audi, Porsche and Daimler "for decades", colluding on price and technology.
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if all the major car manufacturers have been using defeat software for years in order to pass/exceed emissions restrictions.

From what I understand some of the software updates are to get rid of the 'lag' people are complaining about with the S Tronic gearboxes as well as emissions but apparently they're just fucking the cars up....
