BMW 1M differential oil change DIY

Hey everyone, here's a quick tutorial on how to change the differential fluid on a BMW 1M Coupé.

This tutorial works also for the BMW E9X M3 as the differential is the same.

SAF-XJ 75W-140 + FM booster

As a tip, I would suggest to raise the car slightly on the passenger side while filling the diff to allow a slight overfill, then lowering the car to make it level again and let the oil in excess to drip out... like this you know it is properly filled.

WARNING: Do not use any other oil than the bmw-recommended otherwise grinding noise during slow cornering might happen.

Great video, would love to do this myself in the future for sure, seems simple enough. Can you link to where you got your manual pump?

Thanks

I've got it at my local car accessory shop, it was very inexpensive, around 12$.

Here's a link from eBay, looks like the same as mine

Thank you sir

Any other precautions we should take before doing this? For instance making sure the car is cold as to not have molten hot oil fall on your face or anything like that?

It's interesting that the new bottles of fluid don't have the built-in fill spout that the older ones do. Kind of a bummer, actually, since you could do the fluid change without a pump with the older bottles.

It's usually not the spout that causes the problem, but rather the clearances to get in there. You could never fit a bottle in there anyway.

With the car on jackstands I've done numerous diff fluid services using only the spigot on the bottle to fill the pumpkin.

No problem!

I would say just make sure your car is properly jacked up or secured on a lift, that's the most critical part.

If you had gone for a short drive before, the diff oil temp won't be high enough to be "dangerous" and indeed if it's a little warm it would help flowing while draining.

Just careful with the exhaust as is quite near your hands but that's all I was wearing gloves and eye protection cause you don't want any nasty stuff falling into your eyes as you're facing upwards most of the time

Yes unfortunately I wasn't expecting the "new" bottles to come without the spout... had to get the pump but it was very cheap and made the job quite easy

Was my first diff oil change and it is really straight forward.. took me 55 min (I was checking ) and I was also filming meanwhile

Nice video, Alby_416! Thanks!

How did you find out the 60 Nm torque value for the differential drain and fill plugs?

On a related note, do you know the proper torque value for the manual transmission fluid change? I need to do that, as well.

Thanks again for the great video!

26 ft-lbs for both the fill and drain bolts for the manual transmission fluid. (Just did it last week.)

The differential bolt torque spec Alby mentions is correct, as well.

Historically for me it's been about 1.3L on the MTF (smells like fish) and 1.2L on the diff fluid (smells even worse - spouse walked into garage and thought there was a natural gas leak.)
