Let's Analyze The Break-in Oil, Shall We?

The most interesting thing about this report is, well, there's nothing very interesting to report. Oil tested to be nominally 20W-50. Perhaps this will serve as a nice baseline or data point for somebody someday.

You may now resume whatever it was you were doing

Thanks for the info. Have you had this done with your other cars?

No, I haven't. But I was curious as to whether the break-in oil was different and whether the break-in period resulted in a lot of engine wear. It'll be interesting to see how much these numbers fall after another oil change or two

FYI, I don't know if this qualifies but by total freak coincidence the odometer hit exactly 1200 miles when I rolled into the dealer. The key, however, said 1201, so I guess I can't chalk that up in my book of Cool Things That Will Never Happen Again. The dealer said this discrepancy "happens" and suspects that the key stores the actual miles (as best as can be determined) as opposed to the miles reported by the odometer (which runs deliberately high, just like the speedo)

so, is it or isn't it true that they use a different type of oil (break in) in our cars for the 1st 1200 miles?

Hard telling.... I don't know if there is a enough variability in the tests such that a 10W-60 oil could test 20W-50. If the tests are accurate then the answer would seem to be no.

Looks like it definately is true since the nominal weight of the oil in the sample was determined to be 20W50. The car normally runs 10W60 Castrol TWS Motorsport synthetic.

I was told by my CA that there indeed was a different oil used during the break-in period.

The service booklet that comes with the car says that!
