Anyone tint the front windshield (for heat barrier)?

Hi ppl,

Anyone tint the front windshield? I'm interested in blocking off the heat from the front, I don't want to make it darker...preferably the lighter the better.

Also, if you tint the front windshield, does it scratch easily when you clean it with a towel/cloth while you go to the car wash?

Can anyone give me suggestions on what brand to use specifically to block heat from the sun?

Thanks in advance!

from wat i have been told tinting the windshield is not a good idea for visibility reasons and the fact that while the tinting shops tints the windshield with the high heat they use it can crack is some places. Your best best is to go with 5% all around and get a OEM BMW sunshade.

I would suggest just getting a tint all around too, but if you really really want a tint in the front windshield, I suggest just getting 50% on the front. Anything darker and you really limit visibility, especially at night.

i spoke to my tint guy today. he said there is a new 100% visibility film that can be used on windshields. my windows are 22% front 13% rear

cheaper solution would be getting one of those reflectors from an auto parts store and put it up when you leave your car outside.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'm sorry but I guess I forgot to said that I will be tinting the side (40%), rear-side and rear (35%) as well.

I'm just curious if tinting the front is suggested and will it scratch easily due to regular wiping with cloth while washing. Or should I just get a BMW sunshade?

Thanks again!

So you should be fine. Plus when it cures to the windshield...it should be fairly durable and will withstand the occasional wipe down. A lot of guys in the middle east seem to like tinting their front windshield really dark. I suppose it makes sense for their climate.

You can get a highly visible tint...that will reject some heat and most of the UV rays...but I suspect it will be metallic tint which may affect radio/sat/radar reception. Check to make sure...

The place where I got my tint installed also has a product called UV Shield made by Formula One. 99.9% protection from UV rays. There were 2 types:
UV Shield 75, 78% light transmission, 21% heat rejection
UV Shield 85, 85% light transmission, 16% heat rejection
Not sure what the prices are for install, but I would imagine they would be similar to tint install.

They should not scratch the tint if they are using towels that are not dirty. Make sure if you do get it tinted you go to a good place. The windshield is laminated and if they add to much heat it will crack the windshield.

Well, they're going to wipe down the inside of your windows too. Hell, I make them wipe my rear windshield.

If you're going to get tints on your windshield, consider 50% in CERAMIC. Search ceramic.

I've had 35% on my windshield and 20% on the rest of the vehicle on my last 2 trucks and never had any issue with visibility. HID headlights and foglights easily take care of that problem!!

If anyone who tints their windshield is unfortunate enough and just happens to get
involved with that car in an accident, they could potentially end up having to do a
lot of explaining to the police and the insurance. It looks good to tint the car all
around but I don't think it's worth that risk.

BMW option for comfort windscreen has a UV filter in the glass laminate. It has a small non tint area around the rv mirror so RF for toll responders door openers etc can work.

Any tint you place on any window reduces visibility and the distance you can see a object. Fighter pilots often use clear visors during the day or put their visor up when 40 miles away from contact to make sure they can see as well as possible. If you tint a car in violation of the law and have a accident you can face big legal issues. A woman was killed near where I live and the cause was front windshield tint. The driver never saw her in the crosswalk on a dark night.

thats such a rare case...yes it can happen. but come on..he must have had 5% or 20% on the front windshield...WHICH IS TOO DARK!!!

However, having a 50% on the windshield doesn't change your visibility of a woman on a crosswalk...believe me there were other factors involved in that accident and they just blamed on the windshield tint to prove a point and have something/someone to blame!

I have 50% on my windshield, i've had it for 4 years now and I've never not seen anything in front of me, and I drive quite a bit up north on unlit roads.

I can say that my 5% on the side windows is dark, and sometimes I roll them down when turning to make sure no one is walking or nothing is in my way - but as for the windshield - there is NOTHING wrong with a 50% (besides the law)
