CA Emissions testing - They are looking for pre cats
Took my n54 FBO car for CA smog test. I put all stock parts back on charge pipe and even the stock air cleaner.
Only part not stock were catless down pipes. I have a JZW flash tune that does not effect the OBD2 self checks.. all the CA smog test checks for. so tune is fine. have the down pipe fix in place also. so no CEL's First place I went guy found catless downpipes in 1 min. I went to another place guy was looking for a while with a mirror.. You do have to really know what your looking for and its not easy. He passed it. My point being is I have never seen them be that careful in visual checking. Be careful out there. They seem to be onto this mod more than they used to. |

Interesting do you think they will pass me if i have an upgraded chargepipe and Forge DVs? I also have a JB4 with a MHD BEF so im guessing i have to flash back to stock as well.

Doubt it
I have a CARB EO sticker from burger on my Cone filters. But to take out the charge pipe you have to take them off. so I figure go as stock as you can. I put on stock air cleaner.
I would say you have a 75% chance of passing with catless dp. Just be careful. Maybe ask for a pre check.. You dont want to be black flagged. On the Xdrive cars like mine. you have to pull the subframe to get dp in and its not a simple job. No way you will pass with out the stock charge pipe. 2places I went is hardly that much of a statistical significance. I have never seen them take out mirrors and look for cats. I think its some new directives they have been given. Takes 20 min to change charge pipes. Its also a reason to NOT go with air intakes that are on the turbo side. You need to be able to make it look stock. NOt sure on your tune. If its passing the OBD2 self checks your good. any obd2 diag tool will tell you. You need a DP fix.. dont want to list names for obvious reasons but there is a common perf parts company that sells them. If your running catless dp. Last edited by TSRxi; 09-12-2017 at 10:32 AM.. |

I just passed CA smog with a VRSF charge pipe, and factory intake. The charge pipe is using the factory diverters, and is all matte black. It appears stock, and is mostly covered by the factory intake, so I think that's the best way of getting by. I think they take out the mirrors and start looking for stuff as soon as they become suspicious. That could be by way of them seeing an aftermarket intake (whether legal or not), or just you asking them a bunch of questions about what passes and what doesn't.

More of an FYI
Guys. I think we all agree. I dont go asking anything when I go to get smogged. I hand over my reg card and sit back.
My point to this is I sense that the CA smog gov agency has issued a directive to be more careful in verifying cats. I said that going to 2 places hardly makes any trend. I smog a handful of cars a year and I have never seen them do a detailed check with mirrors. They used to just quickly look under the car for the main cats. now 2 places both with mirrors on a telescoping antenna where looking for cats,02 sensors, and also for leaks. This is a new. I agree. I thought about leaving my VRSF charge pipe on with blow off. its all black and with the stock air cleaner I think I would pass also. But you have no idea how smart you tech is. or how intensely they look. the point of the post is. Be careful I sense they have become more strict. These guys can lose their license if they pass a person out of compliance. so there is little in it for them to pass you if your missing required parts. So just thinking your set because you have no CEL's and or your passing OBD2 readiness checks. I would do some research about the shop and the tech. ask for a precheck etc. |
