You are wrong. It has a hidden OBD menu where You can check engine temps, battery voltage and a lot of other things.

What sort of trips does she do in it? I had a 118d for 4 years and found around town, short trips and start stop traffic would kill my MPG.

It also has a small tank which makes it feel like its worse on fuel than it actually is, but on a long motorway run it would nearly double the miles per tank compared my normal go to work and daily driving.

But to answer you question yes it does have have a hidden menu, take a look on youtube, there are a fair few videos to show you how.

She has just bought the car, 6yr old and 40k on the clock. the registered average mpg was 32 mpg and seemed to have been like that for some time.
I zeroed the figures and she got 46 mpg on the motorway, still poor. I wondered about the stats and giving it a burst on the motorway.

Check the Engine temps on hidden menu and then if needed replace EGR and Main thermostasts. Low engine temps really influence mpg on these cars.

Driving style? Auto/manual? using 6th gear? how long on motorway, what speed, engine warmed up?

Always a good thing to check when test driving a car before buying, is to reset the MPG display and monitor it, then compare against the spec for the car.

Worth getting the intake and EGR cleaned. It did wonders to my fuel consumption.
