not necessarily. read the magnusson-moss warranty act and cases that discuss it.

Before you go doing a bunch of research, I will give you the short answer. They won't void your warranty, but if hardwiring the V1 causes a failure they won't fix it under warranty. So, if you do hardwire it in and mess it up so that you fry the car's computer some how, then they won't fix the car's computer under warranty. If your transmission develops a problem, there is no way they are going to be able to say the V1 caused it, so they will still have to fix it under warranty.

Now to really freak you out, if you read the owner's manual you will find that it says just using a radar detector in the car (even if you plug it into the cigarette lighter) can cause severe damage to the car which would not be covered under warranty. Here is the actual text from the manual:

Installation and operation of non-BMW
approved accessories such as alarms,
radios, amplifiers, radar detectors,
wheels, suspension components, brake
dust shields, telephones (including
operation of any portable cellular phone
from within the vehicle without using an
externally mounted antenna) or transceiver
equipment (e.g. C.B., walkietalkie,
ham radio or similar) may cause
extensive damage to the vehicle,
compromise its safety, interfere with
the vehicle's electrical system or affect
the validity of the BMW Limited
Warranty. See your BMW center for
additional information.
