Strange Rotor Wear, Please Help

Hi guys,

I have only had the Brembo GT on the car for less than 5000km, with 1 trackday.

Just noticed that my right front rotor (passenger side) is basically gone... worn out, while the left front is still good...

What might be the cause for this?? Any ideas?

The rotors are Brembo Type3 rotors, and the pads are Brembo Racing (red pads).

Rotors looked fine after the trackday, so I have no clue how it got worn out so fast...

Check your pad thickness while you are at it.

Also, try to spin the wheel/tire by hand while the front end is jacked up. Does the right side drag while the left side spins free?

If the right rotor is thinner than the left and the right set of pads are more worn than the left, I'd say you have a caliper that is dragging.

If the right rotor is thinner than the left and the right side set of pads are worn to the same degree as the left side set of pads, then it's the rotor itself. Likely a manufacturing defect in the heat treating of the rotor or in the raw material itself.

Do you notice that the right side builds up brake dust on the wheels faster than the left side?

The reason why I asked about thickness is a friend of mine had a track car with slotted discs and as they wore one was groove machined shallower than the other for some reason and gave the appearance it was worn more....measurements showed it was very minor and more of a manufacturing anomaly. He got new ones under warranty.....

Recently my mother brought her MB in to have it serviced. They called to tell me the RF pad was toast. I asked what happened and they said the pad was stuck on the carrier and never slid back away from the rotor and just stayed a wore out. Never every heard of or saw such a thing. Might be a something similar where the piston didn't return or the pad got stuck (cockeyed) in the carrier?

I need to visit more and keep an eye on these type of things for her.

I am running Brembo RB170 pads, which I think it's too harsh on the rotors when running cold for daily... that could be why...

That looks like way too much wear for one track day, regardless of how aggressive your pads are...if it was the pads, all rotors (esp., the front) would look like that. Looks like possibly a caliper issue. Have you checked the caliper by driving at slow, medium speed (maybe in a parking lot w/no one around) and taking your hands off the wheel briefly (and safely) to see if the car drifts to the suspect side? Any evidence of that side generating more heat? More brake dust? Do you have photos of the pads? Were the pads radiused properly from the factory?
