Should I tracwrap my M2 for 1 hour drive from dealer to XPEL installer?
I'm finally picking up my M2 next Tuesday and immediately driving it to my XPEL installer to get a full stealth wrap installed. Problem is the installer is 30 miles from the dealer, so probably an hour driving time in LA traffic, and I'm paranoid af about getting rock chips right before an install. How likely is it that this could happen? Is it worth trac wrapping the car,p for the drive over, or in the alternative, towing it to the installer?

It's good that you were able to set up an appt on delivery day. Dealer should keep paint protection stickers on and you add road wrap to unprotected areas of front cross section. Fwiw, I got one visible chip on bumper in 250mi of driving before my xpel appt.

I’m not a local, so I don’t know how likely stone chips are ... but as you’ve gone to the trouble of creating a poll, seems like you’re worried enough.
Instead of bothering with a wrap of some sort (I don’t know what a trac wrap does ... will it cover the whole car or just the front? And if just the front, could you get a stone chip on the rocker panel....?), why not put the car on a flat bed truck and have it transported over..? A regular tow truck may create just as much risk of rock damage as driving it there yourself. Surely that’s less than $100? And it’d minimise the chances of stone chips elsewhere on the car should the trac wrap only cover the front of the car. And congrats on the pending delivery of your car! |

I tracwrapped in between, was a 2.5hr drive. Too cheap to not do it.

if it's only 30 miles you should be fine as long as you avoid the highway.

No one can give you probability of this happening. No one has that data. You're basically gambling.
I drove from the valley to OC after picking up my car, before applying PPF, and I was lucky to not get any rock chips. I also made it a point to stay off the highway, not tailgate drivers, and avoid going over 50MPH. Your mileage may vary. You may go 5 miles and get 3 rock chips. If you're truly anxious about it just get it towed. That's very common. |

I picked up my car last Saturday, avoided the freeway on the 30 mile drive home. Couldn't get the car to the PPF shop until a couple days later where I put on another 200 miles, about half of them were freeway. I drove as distant from other cars as I could the whole way. No chips to be found, I consider myself very lucky.
On a side note, the 230 miles in the car helped me realize the tires pick up everything on the road. Driving on back roads I could hear all the sand and rocks being thrown into the wheel wells which made me decide to do the extended rocker panel Xpel kit that includes rocker panels, larger hip protection piece and a small piece behind the rear wheels. I also asked the dealer to not touch the car when it arrived but they went ahead and fully detailed it and added paint sealant. I suggest you go ahead with the trac wrap. It's a small price for a bit of protection. Last edited by bazerk007; 10-25-2017 at 02:01 PM.. |

FWIW my m2 came with a few rock chips from the dealer.... also have accumulated a few within the 1200 miles I have on it and being cautious. Have you thought about just towing it to the ppf shop?

Wrapping cars....another business opportunity I seemed to have missed.
My opinion only: Its a car, put in gas, drive, enjoy, clean when necessary. Even for a mildly ocd person like myself all this money going into wrapping everything seems a bit extreme. Buy hey, its your car and your money....either way you will enjoy. Mine will be the one with rock chips on the front valance

I take exceptional care of my cars, but wrapping them isn't necessary. It's a huge waste of money imo. For the record I wrapped the front end of my old Z4M coupe. Decided it wasn't worth it for the M2. |
