GAP insurance question

Hi all,

Just trying to make sure I have something right in my head.

New car being collected on Monday.

Our insurance has replacement vehicle cover on it for the first 13 months.

If I am correct, does that mean I don't need to purchase GAP insurance until December 2018, as the 13 months cover our insurance provides will expire on 30th Nov 2018?

Am I right in my assumption?

Thanks.

Yes, you are correct. However you still need to purchase the GAP insurance now (before 90 days of ownership or whatever).

You will then most likely (depending on company) be offered the option to delay start of the insurance by 365 days (ie. it starts after your new for old runs out).

However, I just bought 4 years from day one as the price wasn't massively different and I like belts and braces

OK, thanks, thought I could get away with not buying it until next year, rather than having to do it now.

Not necessarily correct. Your insurance may replace your car with a new one in the first 12months of ownership. However, if you claim off someone else’s insurance, they may not have the same policy and may only pay out market rate. Check with your insurer.

Your current insurer will probably offer only to replace your car with a new one from BMW UK stock. I would be surprised if they would wait 3 months for a new one to be built to the exact specification of your old one.

TBH, we aren't really that fussy, and the one we are buying has came from stock, it has the extras we wanted, and one the wife didnt.... (the Auto transmission) so it would be easy for them to find a replacement for us.

Never thought of the situation of it being a non fault accident tbh.

That happened to me 18 months ago. My 520D MS was smacked at the front after only 9 months of ownership. I had bought it used with 4000 miles on it.

3rd Parties insurance offered to write it off, and gave me what I paid for it 9 months previously.

Never been happier, went from a poverty spec 520 to 535d MS with MS+ pack and pro nav. I intend keeping it for a very long time!

TBH, it’s a bit of a waste of money as is so much else on this forum. I have been driving for 41 years now and my wife a bit less. Neither of us have ever written off a car. However we both bought gap insurance with our latest cars. Why, because I’d read about it on here and got a better rate than BMw offered. Next time I won’t bother because I’m not going to total my car.

My brother in law called me a couple of year ago asking if he should or shouldn't. I told him it's a must.

Two years later, Purple Parking wrote off his car while on holiday. Insurance fell short of he finance figure, GAP paid out and he bought a new car outright as a result.

Sure, potentially he could have sued PP but in the end it was painless, for a £249 one off payment.

At the end of the day it’s one of those things that gives peace of mind.
The fact that Replacement Vehicle GAP for 5 years is only around 300 quid says it isn’t paid out that often. However, it’s 5 pounds a month that could prove pretty lucrative if you need it.

If you're considering going without GAP insurance in the first year, you should understand that it's not without its potential pitfalls. Read this - the article itself was created a while back now but the basic principle is still sound.
