1M Values

Thought I would share this... 29k mile 1M just sold on BAT for $64k. thats a good sign for values creeping up if you ask me.

Amazing. I guess there are probably only 400 some left in US or less.

This one only went for 45k, similar mileage, but had an accident, which was reportedly minor and was very well repaired. Seems like a pretty deep discount . . .

I think the seller was somewhat lucky that two people got into a bidding war over this car between $48k and the close at $64k.

It was a clean no-nav example, but it had 3 prior owners and average mileage for a 1M.

Clean no nav examples hard to find in US. So many were ordered with nav in us. Lovely car!

Wow, that's crazy. To think I paid 20k for my 2011 135i with the same mileage, I can have 3 of those for the same price. I get the craze around these cars but don't see the value behind it. I suppose if you got the money to burn and the space then by all means.

I have a 2013 135i with less than 20K mileage, and a 1M with just over 30K mileage. I like them both, but they are not the same car, not even close, even though I have augmented the power of the 135i with the PPK Flash, and also switched out some of the 1-Series suspension in favor of M3 components.

The 1M is a rare and unique car; it doesn't drive like anything else out there. Is it worth $64K now? Probably not to me, but I paid around $45K for mine a couple of years ago, and I feel like I got a good deal. Similarly, my 135i offers up a driving experience you can't buy now in a new car, but it is a common experience in that I could easily replace it tomorrow with another one bought used, since these things are not exactly rare, and at a price less than I paid for mine, 2 years ago.

That's the way these sorts of things go. The last little increment of performance or value always costs a lot more than the first 90 percent. Throw in rarity, and that's why some people pay $7500 for a bottle of Romanee Conti, or somewhat less for a bottle of Lafite Rothschild. Are the buyers stupid? I'd hesitate to say that. Would I pay that much for those bottles of wine? Probably not.

This upsets me because the 1M is one of my favorite cars and I've wanted one ever since they came out. But it looks like by the time I finish college and then med school these cars will be sitting in the 100-150k range and as much as I love the car Idk if it'll ever be worth THAT much- especially used.

Thankfully companies like Performance Technic (Bay Area) exist to help build a 135 into a 1M, if not opting for the Marco special

I wouldn’t mind the cosmetic portion. I’m pretty happy with the performance of mine.

I'd buy all of the 2015 Romanee-Conti I could lay my hands on for that price! ( I just wouldn't drink it)

What champignon said.

As to asiflicious: I was almost exactly in your position 20 years ago. The one that got away was the buick grand national GNX. Now I own a 1M. Some similarities in the two. Now those cars go for over a 100k which I can't seem to bring myself to get a grand national for that price. My point is that in 20 years there will be another special version of a great car that you too will have and enjoy.

I don't know how many 1Ms there are left in the US. Very doubtful it is down to 400.

Especially since a large number of the Canadian 1Ms have made their way south, due to currency fluctuations.

I would guess there are at least 700 total 1Ms currently running in the USA, if you include all the ones with branded titles.

Of these there are probably 500 or more that are in good enough condition, with low enough mileage, to garner collector interest.

I think they will hold their own in value, maybe increase a bit, but hitting $100K in value in the next 10 years, other than as a result of hyperinflation is very unlikely in my view.

I think $100k in value is very possible... just requires some people to start selling their cars in the $70s... then the $80s... and before you know it, bam!

I actually owned several bottles of that wine, from middling vintages, none of which I ever drank, although I have consumed very small quantities of Romanee Conti on at least 3 occasions.

I sold the bottles that I had years ago, through an online auction operated by a wine store, and received store credit in return. One of the few "good investments" I ever made in wine.

My most recent taste of this wine was 4 years ago in a fine restaurant in France that is located not far from where the primary owners of the estate live. I was seated at the adjacent table to theirs. He is French and she was originally American. We have met several times over the years, very briefly. They recognized me and graciously offered me a thimble-full taste of the 1961, which they were drinking with another couple, a bottle brought in from their own cellar. In all honesty, the wine was old and tired, but it was a thrill to taste it, nonetheless.

You don't need to spend anywhere near this much money to find an enjoyable red Burgundy to have with dinner :-)

Interesting this particular AW 1M sold for $64k. There are lower mileage examples on sale for less money or the same money. I think the bidding war at the end helped a lot.

However, $100k or bust baby! To the moon!

Let's say for the sake of argument that 3 years from now the car is miraculously worth $100K. Would you still drive it?

I would have second thoughts. In fact, I might sell or trade it if that were to happen. I think I would become so worried about having an accident in it, that it would just sit. And if it is going to sit in my garage and not get driven, then why own it in the first place?

That is what happened to the bottles of wine I purchased long ago that appreciated to ridiculous values; I sold them to someone even dumber than myself, and bought a whole bunch of really good wine that I actually have drunk.

Personally, I'd still drive it. Agreed upon value with my insurance carrier and enjoy the drive. These are material items, they exist for me, not the other way around. If they are rare and increase in value, all the better. I will not let it if affect my enjoyment, unless for the better.

Here's to less speculating and more enjoying.

IMHO the analogy doesn't work. What you did with your wine collection makes absolute sense if the aim is enjoyment over status. There is an amazing array of $50/bottle wine that would offer at least 95% of the enjoyment that you could get out of a $500/bottle. This does not correlate to the 1M and cars in general. I posit that there is no $10,000 car that could offer anything close to the balanced performance, fun, comfort, and reliability of our (theortetical) $100,000 1M.

Don't cage your 1M in this future scenario. Daily drive it. The relatively negligible depreciation will be offset by the joy it brings you. Just make sure to insure it properly.
