Love the cracks and burbles of the M40i.

It sounds absolutely epic. Actually it sounds a lot like my 18' F80 M3 Competition....

Question is are the cracks and burbles permanently on or are they diminished in comfort and Eco pro.

I drove the new X3 M40i on Saturday and was beyond impressed with the exhaust noise.

I didn't even put the X3 in sport / sport +. I forgot / was distracted with the exhaust noise and engine power.

Good question, on my F80 M3 with the competition pkg its still there in sport and comfort mode, but yes definitely diminished. Sport+ and its wake up the neighborhood time :-D

Great news... I love the engine/exhaust on it from what I'm seeing in videos.

It would be nice if it can be toned down, there are times you don’t want to be a boy racer.

Comfort and eco pro will be definitely quieter than sport and sport+

The cracks and pops are caused by the ecu deliberately misfiring one cylinder. Really noticeable when you lift off sharply.

You only really hear them in Sport and Sport+. I drove one yesterday and it sounds so good.

Thanks for sharing that information, I had not seen it before.

So they are doing the break in oil change? Or is it just the drive conservatively for the first 1200 miles and then gradually increase the revs etc?

I had the true break in period on my E30, after which the break in oil was changed. Had the same on my E92 M3. No revs over 4000, no high speeds, vary speed...

For my F32, during the break in they recommended changing speed as opposed to driving 1000 miles at 55. BMW only provides brake in oil changes on ///M cars these days (I think.) So we will have to pay for ours.

That is what I thought. The break in oil on my M3 was a different grade than the oil after break in. That said, I do not mind paying for the occasional "extra" oil change. My BMW ownership days go back to when we used a different oil in summer than in winter. So when I would change tires, I would also change oil. And, yes I like having a dipstick to check the colour of my oil.
