Do you have an oil leak and not know it?

So a month or so ago I changed oil in my M235. Everything seemed fine. I always keep a sharp eye under my cars for signs of oil leaks. Well, one day I find a drip. Upon inspection the oil filter cover o-ring was not sealing correctly. It had been leaking quite a bit and when I pulled the under pan there was a lot of oil to clean up. Now on my E46 there were four screws holding a plastic tray under the engine. In this car there must be 20 screws holding an absorbent material. It turns out this new tray material is designed to absorb leaks so you don't know you have a problem. I guess checking the garage floor isn't good enough anymore. Replaced the o-ring and all is well.

I also had a pretty descent leak on my oil filter housing at the o ring seal and it was being flung by my serpentine belt throughout the engine bay and didn't notice for a while. I purchased the ECS Tuning Billet aluminum housing and no more issues. I highly recommend it.

Bad o ring or bad cap.Replace both with OEM. Aluminum cap is primarily cosmetic as first line of ECS copy states.

Arrow

That ECS Tuning Billet aluminum Cap is very nice looking. I like that it has the ability to use a ratchet socket to remove.

But, agree with others...about OEM.
