Locking car whilst defrosting windscreen

With the first frost this morning since getting my lci, I went outside to start the car to warm it up as I’ve done with my last couple of f3x’s and locked it whilst the engine was running to go back in the house.

The difference this time was the horn sounded twice which wouldn’t have been an issue except it was 6am so I’m not sure my neighbours will appreciate this over the next few months!

Now I understand why it does it but as I’ve never had this before I assume it’s new so would like to disable it if possible.

Can anyone help please?

Funnily enough exactly the same thing happened to me - had no idea about this "feature". My 330d didn't do it.

My 2016 car doesn't do this? Must be a recent nanny state meddling feature.

It appeared on my F31 a punt a year ago; part of a software update it seems

Place your key on the driver's window and lock the car.

It’s probably to prevent people accidentally leaving there car running when they park it somewhere for hours or even days!

Thank you! My car started doing this after an update to sort a pronav issue. The dealer is aware and said they have raised it with BMW after I pointed out that the horn sounding at 6.30am is not very neighbour friendly. Holding the key by the glass works well.

Are there any insurance implications by doing this. I guess the car could be stolen just by smashing a window as it is already running?

Likely pre heating cabin and rear window (rear window doesn't need engine I don't think, or at least you can turn it on).

It's actually an offence to leave a car running idle in the UK and you thought the beep was nanny state.

This is one this I miss being able to to now - simply can't leave the M3 running on the drive early morning, my neighbours would quite rightly slaughter me!

Only if it's on the public road.

If BMW fitted the ceramic heater as they do on the 5-series and up then it wouldn't be an issue anyway.

Top tip Tried it this morning and it now locks in silence so no need to code it out.

For me... I could but I don’t want to.

I return from walking the dogs, start the car on the way back into the house, grab my things and lock up by which time the seats and steering wheel have started to warm up, the windows are defrosting and I’m ready to leave for work without having had to scrape and/or use de-icer.
