Tinting in NYC

Once I get my 440 GC I want to get it tinted at least 35%. But the new law here is you can pass state inspection if your window is 70%. I'm sure there's ways to go around this.

Unfortunately there is no other way around it. I had to remove my tint 3 weeks ago prior to inspection. I asked my tinting shop for a retinting discount. Probably I have to pay around 120$ for 4 windows. I heard that some inspection stations here in upstate doesn't not check for it but it is hard to locate one unless you know someone in the business.

i know its bullshit here. can't do shit to ur car !! I'm prob not even going to bother tinting. not worth the hassle

Visit eye doctor, see if you have a sensitivity to bight light. If so, there might be a law to allow tinting if your eye doctor.... This pertains to NH, yet not sure what NY / NYC laws provide for.

None that are legal. The stock tint of BMW glass is 70%, so you can't add any more to the sides. So long as you have side mirrors there's no restriction on the rear window.
For reasons that could only make sense to a politician the rule doesn't apply to SUVs, trucks and vans.

do you have to have working windows? if not roll down windows pull fuse and there you go, windows dont work

best of luck dude. I had tint 15% all around on Long Island, didn't get harassed. My cousin did too. As soon as he moved to Long Beach he got pulled over 3 times over it! such bullshit. so glad I moved away.

Most definitely not that simple in NYC, unfortunately. The paperwork for a medical excuse is arduous at best. Only a very specific subset of skin/eye conditions are allowed for a tint waiver.

There's some places if you like 100 over the inspection price they will pass you ! I found out today

That's $100 to get the sticker, how much more to pay the tickets? NYPD and NYSP are getting serious about enforcing this. It's mainly because of them that the change came about, and that change was mandating the testing, not the percentage. That's unchanged since 1992. Now that testing is mandatory not only can you no longer use "I didn't know" as an excuse, you also provide them with probable cause to stop you and search your car.

If you're really upset get the tinting outfits together with the ACLU and sue the state. The prohibition is unconstitutional, because it applies only to 'passenger vehicles', and leaves SUVs, pickups and vans out of that classification, even though they clearly carry passengers. There can be no justification that allows full tinting of an Escalade but not a Camry. That violates the doctrine of equal protection.

yes it's on.
I've got a ticket once for having a clear transparent protective plastic over the plate. can't imagine how many tickets I would've gotten if no front plate.
