Car and Driver X3 M40i Test Numbers vs Macan S, Velar, AMG GLC, F-Pace S, Velar HSE

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Car and Driver put out their indepth review of the Velar and in it they also have test results for the X3 M40i, GLC43, Macan S and F-Pace S.

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...h-model-review

I wish we could tell which tires it was tested with, based on the braking and cornering, I hope it's the all seasons.

Thanks for sharing, ND40oz. Their C/D [Car and Driver] Observed is in agreement with the numbers I shared earlier for our 120 mile Interstate experience with cruise set at 79mph. To see that it leads this pack of five of the top performance SAVs is certainly an accomplishment. Although most purchasing in this segment may not view fuel economy as one of their main reasons for buying, it does illustrate BMW Engineering's pursuit of EfficientDynamics (which cannot be construed as a simple marketing slogan it seems). And combine that with its first-in-class acceleration numbers to 1/4 mile (and fastest at 50-70mph - passing acceleration) is much appreciated.

Some of us care about road handling, so hopefully like the OP questioned the X3 was wearing all season rubber

While the 0 to 60 numbers are more publicized, the metric I've been most impressed so far is the 50 to 70 acceleration. That is what I need for changing lanes in heavy interstate driving and so far, my M40i has been more than impressive. If I decide I need a little more juice on the freeway, I'm there in an instant!! Glad to see it validated on this comparison.

Test drove the supercharged Velar here found here ——>>> http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showpo...3&postcount=60

it slower, heavy and ponderous, the c&d review shows the same

Once an ECU Remap comes out, the M40i could probably do high 3s 0-60. Totally insane for a 4000 pound SUV.

Yeah, not as good as those in this comparison, but still better than the Audi Q5 (0.81) or the Lexus RX450 (0.77). The one that surprised me was how well the GLC43 tested. I never test drove it since I just hadn't like the looks of the GLC's I've seen.

The GLC seems to be superior, very surprising...BMW had its stats but are trailing it.

I test drove a GLC prior to getting my X3 and thought it drove well from my very limited time in it. BMW felt dynamically better, but the GLC 43 is definitely a nice truck. Did not get on it since I try to respect the fact that someone will own it eventually. Interior felt like a cave on the GLC, but the overall presentation we very nice with deviated stitching, red belts, etc.

I don't know why any BMW fan would celebrate these numbers considering the BMW is supposed to be the ultimate driving machine and the Mercedes wiped the floor with the BMW in road-holding and braking and matched the BMW in acceleration.

Are we really celebrating the superior fuel economy in a performance SUV category when the Mercedes beat us in performance?

Pains me to see this given I've been a BMW fan for 33 years.

Perspective, I guess. All of these cars are great fun. Are you really going to be disappointed that it beats a Macan S on acceleration and braking, while managing a great fuel economy? It isn’t a zero sum game for me, where it has to beat everything else on paper or I’ll be disappointed.

The Mercedes is not an option for me, anyway. It’s a great car on paper and I’m sure they’ve done a good job but it could do Mach 3 and I wouldn’t even bother taking a trip to the dealer to see it.

Appreciate that OP.

Damn that Velar is looking more and more expensive every week ! Quite how it comes out so badly vs the same chassis/engine F-Pace is bizarre. Ouch. TBF to LR its not pitched as sporty as the F Pace on purpose. Still, it feels like £20k more for flush door handles now

Well done BMW on the X3....I think it might be a home run and return to the top of the segment...

That's just it. for me it didn't feel like a truck at all. it felt like a slightly higher than average car. didn't have an SUV seating postion at all. it also felt super tiny inside. I really wanted to like it. just didn't float my boat.

Surprised they didn't include the SQ5 in the testing. It has best roadholding and brake distance out of the group. I am still waiting for the X3M to truly compete with the big dogs aka the AMG and Macan Turbo.

The X3's 50-70mph time is really impressive.

And my God, the GLC has been posting great numbers in every review I've read...great alternative if you're a MB fan.

Wouldn't the upcoming M model be the proper comparison against an AMG?

This is the "AMG" version. Much like the M40i is the "M" version. The X3M will compete against the true AMG, the GLC AMG63
