335i New Camshaft Required

My 335i displayed its amber engine warning light a week and a half ago. Power went down though the car was perfectly driveable, so I could get home. The Emergency Assist chap plugged his machine in and diagnosed a problem with the operation of the VANOS system. A trip to the garage - during which the car performed faultlessly - revealed that there was a problem with the machining on the camshaft which controls the inlet valves. The required level of oil pressure to properly operate the VANOS system was being delivered. A new camshaft and assorted other bits are required. Car will be in the garage for 10 days as the parts are on back order, a fact that indicates that my problem is not an isolated instance. Has anyone else heard of this problem?

I haven't heard of that problem, but good luck with the repair.

Yes, the cam is defective. The fact that isn't available from stock i.e. is on back order, may indicate that there is a higher than expected level of demand i.e. possibly due to a lot of failures.

Car is only 2 1/2 months old with 4,500 on the clock, so from a cost viewpoint I'm completely relaxed as it's covered by the warranty.

The diagnostic equipment pointed them to the VANOS problem and a physical inspection revealed the defective machining.

First I've heard of that. I believe I saw someone with a NA 3XX (whatever you guys have over there) post about needing a cam a long time ago but, not on a 335 before.

If it was a machining defect it seems odd it would take 4000 miles to become an obvious problem. Sounds more like something wasn't machined properly then broke.

No it means it's just not something regularly stocked. Which it isn't as it's not a part that fails often. I know you want to be dramatic and edgy but sorry.

I saw a TSB about something like this not long ago. I believe this did affect some 335i models... what production are you?

I assumed that was a typo and was suppose to read "wasn't being delivered...". Maybe the OP can comment.

Not so! I am chilled about this as it's a warranty claim. I would be in a state if this happened outside warranty.
