Vmax - (On legal roads / track)

So I'm curious how real-world numbers compare to BMW stats.

I've got an F31 M Sport 320d, 184bhp stock and managed to get 144.84 mph in a straight line.

I could have potentially edged out a couple more mph, but that was pretty much it. Not bad for a four pot diesel!

What have others achieved with their F3x series? I'm very curious with those that have tuned their diesels....

To make that a true legal run you'll have to do it going the other way as well.

But, really, that is the only way to determine actual top speed. Even a slight tail wind will help a lot. Elevation changes also come into play.

What did you use to measure speed? GPS?

Yup, I used my phone GPS so fairly accurate. The speedo itself was showing over 150mph which I didn't believe (but it was nice to see).

It was just me messing around so nothing official, but the piece of tarmac was flat and straight. I couldn't tell you about the wind speed...

Knowing people who use phone GPS for logging runs - anything from 5k to marathons, they are actually rather horribly inaccurate. Anywhere from 3-6% out.
A group of us ran the Dublin half marathon this year. Four of us wearing 'proper' Garmin GPS running watches (which we know are very accurate, having tested them on accurate measured courses) all recorded the distance as being from 13.15 to 13.25 miles. The one person logging it on their phone was 13.8 miles. We ran the whole thing as a group.
If they're inaccurate for distance, then they'll also be inaccurate for speed, because

speed = distance/time.

Interesting you bring this up so I did some research and I came across a paper examining this exact question.

I do get where you're coming from but that is constantly tracking small changes in direction surrounded by buildings, other phones, and a huge amount of "noise". So I would agree in the grand scheme of things, a marathon run will be fairly inaccurate.

However, that changes significantly in a wide open space such as a long road where you calculate a Vmax.

Once you gain a fairly consistent speed, GPS speed measurements are very accurate. (Within 1cm/s accuracy or 0.022mph using very cheap GPS equipment).

Once you start adding changes in direction, and elevation, the accuracy drops, but that's down to the number of satellites and quality of the GPS receiver and it's not very significant.

http://gauss2.gge.unb.ca/papers.pdf/...04.serrano.pdf

(Note the concluding remarks for a summary of the paper).

So overall, I'd say my measurement was about as accurate as you're going to get.

Had my 335d hard in to the limiter, just had it remapped and limiter removed but not stupid enough to try any harder!

125 MPH so far with ease. I think I can see 145-150 MPH or maybe even more out of this Diesel engine which is not too shabby.

About 150 MPH is not a problem. Can comfortably cruise at 100-120MPH all day long. Good engine. Not an M3 engine with M3 acceleration but good enough for most highway driving.
The fuel economy, comfort and speed is a good trade off for daily use

Thats pretty cool .. is the mpg in instantaneous or average ? I'd love to see it in instantaneous if it isn't.

150 indicated - so likely 140 on GPS. Never measured it exactly, but might one evening now this thread is here.

205mph in one of my previous cars is the fastest I've driven. Once you've cracked 200, nothing really compares lol
