We just got a big shipment of these in. Haven't had a chance to drive it yet but based on aesthetics alone, it's a really boring looking car on the outside. This car is the most vanilla car in our current lineup. It's like Bmw's design team completely gave up on this car. For those who haven't seen one in person, see for yourself first.

It's far from beautiful, but at least it's not among the most aesthetically challenged (Lexus) and doesn't have fake exhausts (SQ5). Rear also has some hips and is a bit more attractive than the prior gen.

Sorry you have been jammed with a crummy fleet of no optioned vanilla but most of us are already driving around kicking ass in a whole assortment of delicious flavors. Go research for yourself first. To each their own.

I completely agree with you, im trying to force myself to like it but so far nothing.

The problem that I see is that this car makes a lot more sense for me and my two kids than my current M3 in a winter in New England

Not sure about the 30 trim price point, but the m40i is a pretty decent deal when compared to GLC 43, SQ5 or Macan S with similar equipment, and the Macan S doesn't have available automatic braking.

The fact that some people are getting $8k off of MSRP on these models makes the price much more attractive. However, I agree with the OP's sentiments - I'm not paying big bucks for a 4-cylinder, especially an SUV.

Lots of people are willing to. We've been selling these like crazy with zero deals. M40i are gone before they show up it seems lol. For what it's worth I think they are the best looking X3 Gen and the M40i looks amazing.

Take a drive in one and see if you are still disappointed. I think the new X3 is a great ride and I have a M3 too

Oh, I have no doubt it will sell well. Having driven a bunch of 4-bangers as rentals, and driving them as rentals..., I know that the modern 4-cylinder has come a long way from my 1982 Dodge Colt. The interior and exterior styling, amenities, and handling will sell this car. The difference in performance between the 4 and the 6 isn't enough for most people to worry about.

You can easily get a basic 30i for less than 53k. Many like myself have spec'd up to get some of the tech trickled down from the 7 and 5. But yes it's a luxury car. By the way almost all small and midsize luxury cars are built with turbo four cylinders for fuel economy reasons including 5 series and E class

I personally don't take care how this car looks or performs.
Most of people buying these are like Honda Accord or Toyota Camry buyers.
They buy one because they need one to drive around, not for status or anything else.
Getting emotional over this car is pointless IMO.

Oh I don't know about that. There have been quite a few forum members getting out of M3s and other things to this because of its performance. Or people attracted to the looks and/or nice interior. Clearly everyone has to strike their own personal balance of performance, status, style, and utility, but I don't think there are many buying these just because they need *something* to get around!

Agree. There are less expensive SUVs with similar safety features and utility. Clearly purchasing a vehicle in this range involves at least a small splurge, and with that comes some emotional or qualitative considerations.

The m40i is definitely the better bargain for what you get. Crazy the 30i can be spec'd for so much though

Completely off base. Most people buying these, because of the price point, want more than just an appliance to get around. Personally, I like the styling of the new generation; it's nothing overtly sexy, but it has an understated elegance that works well amongst its peers.

If we wanted something like an Accord or Camry, we would've purchased a CRV or RAV4.

There are much more boring looking and many ugly SUVs in the same price range to my eyes, but I won't start the bashing.

The x3m40i is attractive and all bmw- the guy complaining on exterior vanilla needs to see one all Spec'd out with 20s.

It's also evolution from the last x3 which was a huge improvement over the original.

That said- I love the current x5 more. Its design is almost flawless to me.

Ever since the X3 came out, there has always been this bashing of this model by BMW owners of other models and that always irked me. From day one, X3 owners were looked at as something "lesser" than themselves. It's not as much nowadays, but this post brings me back to when I got my first X3 in 2007 - even to the extent of comments that a man wouldn't be caught dead driving a X3, and that it was something for his wife. If you look back at the posts from the early 2000s about this car on this forum and others, you'll see those comments. Even people buying X3s were sometimes shamed into claiming it wasn't for them. My dad (RIP) had a 5 series and I think even he questioned my decision back then.

I guess things haven't changed so much with some folks. You're going to have your old-school M fans that abhor anything not M, and certainly anything that is M-performance and not M-powered. Then you'll have the 3/5/x series fans that still think the X3 is an eyesore and an insult to BMW. that's basically how the BMW fandom has been, despite the X3 rising up in stature especially after competitors starting coming out with their own luxury compact SUVs.

I admit I'm X3 biased. I was single for a good portion of X3 ownership and it gives me a nice ride with good utility that also made me feel like I was driving a car. I like how it looks, and since I am a tech-head, I really like what they've done inside. The X3 still makes the most sense for me right now, however let's stop it with the X3 owners are not real BMW fans mentality.
