Sat in the New M5 @ LA Auto Show Today
Nice interior, but I think the outside is kind of "Wimpy". Not that much different than the M550. Needs wider rear fenders. But I will probably get one.

I sat in the car today also. The seats were absolutely dreamy. As an F10 M5 owner I have to say this new M5 is leaps and bounds better in every way.

Not disagreeing w/ your assessment but the powerplant’s recycled from the F10 M5 so certainly not better in any way. Beautiful car, yes, but BMW did little to inspire w/ this car IMO.

I understand your complain, but talking to some costumers that want to buy this car and after reading some opinions here on Bimmerpost, Its seem most of the costumers prefer this kinda of "sleeper" style of the M5. Not quite discrete but also not quite "Look at me I am a Lamborghini!!"

I'm starting to really dig this color looks good. It's a HANDSOME car for sure. If I get one though gonna have too add some M Perf Parts especially the exhaust and rims for sure not digging these OEM wheels. There's no doubt in my mind this car will perform from a driveabilty level like no other M to date. I can't wait to see this against the E63

I sat in the M5 yesterday as well. I will go back before the Autoshow is over to give it a second look though.
There were certain things I found to be quite good but overall I feel the car is too mundane and the best word I can use to describe it is "indistinctive." I wish I could be excited about this car, but I'm just not. Two things that will take me the longest to get over are the recycled engine and duplicate side view mirrors from the base 5-Series with different shaped covers. The entire car makes me feel like it's really just a sedan version of the X5M. I mean if you look closely even the front bumper design looks almost identical between the two.

First post here . . . .
I also sat twice in this M5 at the LA Auto Show. I've watched the new M5 videos and read the many reviews. Perhaps I bring a different perspective since I have never owned, driven, or even sat in a moving BMW before. I am looking to lease a new daily driver in the next few months. I have no brand loyalty to my DD choice. I go with whatever I have never owned before (because life is too short to drive the same DD twice) that fits the general profile I am looking for at the time. Right now that profile has rotated back to the E55 AMG category I once owned: under the radar, four doors, high performance when you want it and relatively comfortable when you don't. Since I'm new to BMW I don't bring with me any evolutionary M5 perspectives (which I fully understand and invoke myself, but with other car brands.) This lack of historical brand and model knowledge leaves me to evaluate only what I see without thoughts about what use to be, what might have been, etc. As such, my personal: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly The Good: Overall performance Stereo system Exhaust sound The Bad: Single-piston rear brake caliper. Whether or not brake fade or the braking distance is even marginally improved is irrelevant. From a price-category perspective this car deserves a dual-piston rear brake setup. Either extend the engine cover further to hide the twisting jumble of hoses, connectors, etc., or if you want to display them, engineer more symmetry into their design and layout as can be found on other cars. Pick one, but not both. Cheap-look trunk carpet. The Ugly: Fixed "billboard" style display screen. Recess it into the dashboard. Looks like an after-market retrofit. The M1 - M2 buttons are a nice convenience, but I'm not a fan of the "Look at me!" shiny red metallic ears. That's my $0.02. |
