Baseline testing on 08 335i Coupe.

I have been pretty happy that my 07 335i sedan has always been one of the stronger running samples. I was hoping that my 335i coupe wouldn't turn out to be a dog, so I decided to run some baseline tests. I'm pleased that the runs are right where they should be on a good running 335i. 13.3 @ 105+ with a 2.0x 60' time. That is with stock runflats, 91 octane, 1900 miles on the odometer. Not too shabby. Note the Gtech and the Vbox times are right on spot. My Gtech generally reads .5-.8mph slower than the Vbox and a little slower than the drag strip. Probably the way the Vbox calculates speed right at the very end rather than the average of the end of the strip trap distance.

hotrod,

Very intruiged ( suspiciuos ? ) of those figures.

How come you US guys are getting these sub 5 secs figures from your cars on much lower octane fuel than we run in UK ?

BMW's official rating is 5.5 secs to 62mph for 6MT so even adding two tenths correction factor to your figures we are still at 5 secs ish which dusts the old E46 M3. I owned one of those too and it doesnt seem quite right to me. Hoping it is though !

Spill the beans old chap.

In Europe they usually test 0-100km/hr, so it might be a tenth or two higher over there. But most magazine testers, etc, have run the 335i right in the 4.8 second range 0-60mph, and around 13.4-13.5 qtr mile ETs. Heck they rate the 135i at like what, 5.1 seconds? And they are being tested at 4.7 seconds. BMW is pretty conservative with their test results. Secondly, I don't know if the magazines power brake at all. I usually push the DTC button one, leave the shift in sport mode (let it shift itself), and brake boost to about 1500rpm on the launch. (Steptronic). Any more rpm, and it would probably spin. I pretty much had no wheel spin in these 3 medium intensity launches. Didn't even let any air out of the rear tires (about 36psi), wanted to see the stock baseline figures. Just getting rid of the heavier RFTs will result in a measurable improvement. It is immensely useful to have performance meters to evaluate the effectiveness of your mods. Whether it is GPS, or Gtech. You can see how consistant my times are.

FYI, my production date is around 1/08, so it shouldn't have the newest DME/Software.

Thanks, thats great info.

When I think about it, this car is so smooth, quiet and linear with its delivery its probably masking its speed to some degree.

I almost never drive in DS mode so not really experiencing the full performance. When I have done it feels clumsy on the shifts and not so intuitive, ECU not used to being driven in DS?

Oh AND theres the small matter of $12 per gallon gas prices to take into account when mashing the loud pedal also !!

Regards

Yves
