I'd appreciate the help....I really don't want to use my other laptop!

I tried 3 different USB to serial converters with my Macbook Pro running vista. What worked best was the $25 radio shack one. The link Shiv posted has drivers for the radio shack one, the ones from the Radio Shack site are broken. sounds like you already got your stuff working but just in case someone else looks to this thread to work.

Good deal.
Also if you still have your USB installation CD just go to start menu then computer (right side of start menu About 7 lines down from Documents, pictures).
Then double click on DVD RW Drive with the install CD in the drive. Then you'll get the radio shack USB file, right click on it then go to properties then compatibility, set it to run as windows XP.

Then with the USB serial plugged in you can verify you got it set for comm 4.

Make sure you set the USB Serial cable driver compatibility to run as windows XP.

Another option: Go to craigslist/ebay/etc,. and get a used $200 IBM thinkpad. They last forever and have built in serial ports (no USB to Serial adapter required). They are cheap enough to be considered replaceable. In the last 8 years, I've been through 3 of them. It doesn't help that i carry my laptop everywhere. Drop it regularly. And treat it like a football But all I do is slide out the original HD and stick it in the new laptop. Like loading a gun really.
