IDrive finally did it, after all of my praises...

It frick'n crashed and crashed damn hard!

I was listening to my MP3 player in the AUX jack when all of a sudden the Nav screen went black and the music shut off. I looked down and saw that the Eject Buttons for the CD and DVD player were still orange and also the volume knob still had the orange ring of light around it. So from my persepctive, the CD and DVD player were still on.

I tried to do the manual reset but to no avail. I tried to completely shut down the car overnight and see if it would just miraculously reset itself, but still no go. I unplugged the battery in the trunk and still the Nav screen was blank and I couldn't get any music or seatbelt warnings at all.

The weirdest thing was that the CD and DVD player were still on even when I shut down the car and I can hear either an internal fan blowing or the DVD still "playing". I know that there are a few electronic components that stay on for a while after shutting down, but I know that the CD and DVD player are not one of them. Only when I unplug the battery did the CD and DVD player finally turn off. But as soon as I replugged the battery, the disc players turn on and I can hear whatever noise that was coming from the DVD area.

So I took it to the dealer yesterday and they had it overnight. He called me this morning to tell me that they need to replace the whole CCC (Central Command Control) which consists of the Navi Brain, radio and what not. The ETA on the part is Friday and they need to swap it all out.

The worst part of all of this is... I am now the proud loanee of a CHEVY AVEO!!!!!!

A quick question for those who have had their IDrive crash on them: Have you ever played an MP3 cd in the CD drive? I did for the first time that day and the damn thing crashes on me 5 hours later. Just a huge coincidence?

FWIW, I have been using my CD drive to play MP3s and my system never crashed. I've been using a lot for about 3 weeks now. I did one time have to reboot with the "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" iDrive button sequence once, but that was before I ever put an MP3 CD into the thing.

MP3 CDs is all i play in my car and, knock on wood, never crashed. it seems as though your iDrive would crash no matter what, it was just a matter of time and circumstance. something was faulty and it showed.

sorry for your troubles though! chevy, in general, is crap!

I had similar experience couple of days ago. Result was not drastic as yours...

I had driven my car for about half mile & my CD volume was too low so I used steering wheel buttons to up it. But it did not do anything !!
I pressed volume up button 4-5 times but still no effect..
and in few seconds I-dirve restarted itself !!!

Navigation was on too.. but in another 40-50 secs everything came back normal... Navigation resumed.
I was surprised to see this for the first time in 3 months of ownership.
My car is 11/05 production.

I will consider this as a glitch & wait to see it happens again before taking it in.

Thanks for your responses, I guess it was destined to happen and it wasn't a result of the MP3 CD. I was kicking myself in the ass, regretting that I ever put in the CD in the first place. Thanks for calming my nerves.

played mp3 CDs for two weeks straight while doing ED, never ran into any problem.

i guess i should learn the reset tricks in case that happens... i have no clue on how to do this.

Easy, just like a CTRL-ALT-DELETE on a regular computer, but instead you press the two eject buttons (CD and DVD) and the volume button simultaneous.

As the DVD drive of my previous CCC slowly died I had lots of practice...

Mine went down hard in late November and has been in and out of the shop for a total of 17 days since (eight weeks). The CCC, drives, screen, part of the wiring loom have been replaced. Basically every part associated with the iDrive. It's still intermittent which is bugging the hell out of me.

Thanks for this tip. Because unfortunately it just happened to me tonight. Screen froze on the main 4-way option menu and the idrive wheel is now completely unresponsive. Hope this fixes it.

Do you do this procedure with discs in the drives or take them out first?
