Coil Question N52
Quick summery....2011 328i E91, Car is experiencing a sputter when I get on the gas. Not all the time but enough to know something is wrong. No codes are being thrown or check engine lights. Spark plugs are good. My hunch is a COIL, but don’t know which one. At 68.00 a coil rather not replace all of them if I dont have to. Has anyone had experience with this or know how to tell which coil is bad? I’m stumped 🤔

If it's coil you'd get a code. (You can swap 1 at a time if you really have a bad coil and see which one's the culprit)
Did you clean you vanos solenoids ? I'd do that before anything else.

That’s what I thought. But If a coil is going bad would it take a while for it to register a code? Only reason I say that is it’s not sputtering/hesitating all the time. I didn’t think of the vanos solenoids. I will try that. Thank you

I’m probably going to just replace them all. It annoying since it’s not doing it all the time. I’m on the fence reference which coil brand to buy tho. Since I’m running a tune and performance mods I saw that Eldor was the brand to go with. But I found good prices for Delphi and Bosch....decisions decisions

Your code scanner may capture pending codes also. I had a misfire issue, swapped coils between cylinders and did not immediately receive a CEL. I did however have a pending misfire code for the cylinder the suspected bad coil was swapped to. I replaced all 6 coils and called it a day. I changed the plugs too since it was apart.

I wound up getting 6 new Delphi coils for 144.00 hopefully this will resolve the problem. Great price just have to wait for them to here. I read that if you are running a tune these have a tendency to go bad quicker. Fingers crossed

Thanks....That’s my thinking, unless one looks bad. Doing the coils but will check the plugs at the same time. Out of curiosity what plugs you using?

Never had a problem with that company. I don't overthink this car. I keep up the regular maintenance and change all the fluids regularly, but otherwise I beat on it and don't baby it. Just crossed 88000 miles with only 1 O2 sensor going bad. That's IT. As far as I'm concerned, this thing is bulletproof....there goes the karma... |

Agree with spitfire, plugs should be good till 90-100k. I only did mine earlier because my coils went bad at 65.
