Not so great MPG 328D
Just got a cpo 2015 328D wagon. Driving normal on my commute from LA to Burbank everyday I get 24mpg. Probably because my average speed is 24mph. But still, seems a bit low to me. I'm trying to drive relaxed, with a little throttle here and there. The other night I tried to "do my best" at mpg with Eco+ and actually drove like a grandma. I managed to get 33-35 on my way home from work and that included a long hill climb. But it was the most boring drive home...creeping off the line.
So is it just that I am not spending much time on the highway? I have noticed while cruising I am able to get 55-99mpg in realtime. But again, I am only on the motorway for a short stint. I wouldn't be so interested in my MPG but I keep reading on here: "Oh yea, I thrash around in Sport mode all day and still get 38 mpg" If I thrashed around in sport mode on my commute I'm sure I would be getting less than 20mpg....so what gives? I have gummed up injectors or something? |

When I thrash the car around at an HPDE day/weekend I get 15mpg. What's your mpg on long highway trips cruising at about 80mph? Mine is about 38-40. |

Ok thanks for the input. I'm going to put the average mpg on ignore for a while and just enjoy the car. At least I have noticed lots of miles/commutes between fill-ups.
Farkle, I haven't had a long highway trip yet since owning the car 2 weeks. But I sure want to. |

I wonder what mileage you will get if you drive without traffic at a speed of around 65 mph. I am not sure how possible that is for the area you live in.
We are comparing apples to different types of apples. But my 2018 328d sedan, non-xDrive, gets roughly 42 to 46 mpg in combined driving. My average speed is 46 mph per on-board computer, as I do most highway at 60-70 mph and some city driving. Will get stuck in minor traffic here and there. If I do more than half highway driving, 46 mpg in comfort mode is what I have gotten on my last fill. That gets me about 630 miles with 1.3 gallons of reserve left in the tank. Not sure if this helps any, given that you have a wagon with xDrive, but wanted to share my experience. So far, very pleased with N47 engine performance. |

Track your mileage by fillups instead of trusting the computer. It usually reads a bit high, but it can be calibrated and perhaps it's calibrated wrong.
In any case, diesels don't excel at stop and go traffic. And of course a long hill climb is going to result in poor mileage, but a long downhill will result in great mileage. I'd track a few tanks and take notice of what your general driving conditions were. I use www.fuelly.com |
