xDrive Clutch Smell

When driving in the snow I get a smell of clutch after a few slides. I know it’s not my transmission’s clutch since I’m pretty much always in 2nd gear when sliding and obviously know how to drive manual properly. Is this a sign the xDrive clutch is wearing out? The xcase fluid was replaced 24k ago.

That's very unlikely as the clutch will be slipping very little if at all in the snow. Instead, you should be looking at your brakes, which are probably getting hot because of DTC/DSC/ediff. E-diff is active even after doing a 3-second press, and it'll be very active if you're intentionally breaking traction.

That may be it. The t/c was completely off in these cases. I'll smell my brakes next time.

Edit: Was thinking why that hasn't happened the last 5 winters but I did go from stock pads to hawk hps pads last spring so it's a possibility they smell more than stock.

the transfercase isn't really vented well enough that you're going to ever smell what's going on in side it.
