Which G20 models will have the B58 engine?
So I read a post earlier that indicated there would be two models with the B58 but no mppsk to add on or port install. Something like a 340i and a M340i with 350 and 380 horsepower? Anyone have any confirmation what this will look like?

There will no 'regular' 340i, just the M340i with 380 hp or more.

I’ve heard from a very reliable source that there will be both 340i & M340i. Personally I doubt it, but anything could be decided between now and production, which doesn’t start for at least another 8 months!! Mind you with no standard 340i there’ll be one huge gap between 330i (270hp) and M340i (370hp) obviously these are estimated hp ratings

5 Series for example: 530 as the entry level 540 as the middle tier M550 as the top dog (not including true M Models) 3 Series should be similar: 320 (rumors are saying it could go away) 330 M340 Cheers!

My source suggests the 3 range will consist of 318i (UK only?) 320i, 330i, 340i & M350i but he may just be assuming it will follow the 5 range!! I think what you suggest is more likely! So the 5 gets a standard 6 pot car, but then it is a MUCH bigger car! |

A 375-hp M340i is much more likely, and it will maintain the 100-hp gap between the top end series production cars and the base M car. |

The price gap between the 330 & M40 IS JUST GETTING TO large. I have a 2013 335 and it was 5,000 for than the 328 in the base configuration. The 335 came standard with a $1500 sunroof so the price was actually only $3500 more. Now when you go from the 330 to M40 it is $12,000 in the X4 ( No M40 in the 3 series yet to compare ) So the gap used to be $3500 now it is 12,000, an additional $8500 for very little. The extra 35 HP cost BMW nothing, just different software. You do get variable dampening worth about $1500. Now the difference is down to $7,000 for basically marketing bullshit and things like slightly larger brakes that no one will ever notice. I believe BMW will be walking customers if they do not over a 340. Mercedes is doing the crap with their AMG cars. The lower priced AMG gives black brake calipers and the full AMG gives you red, wow. I hope BMW buyers are smarter than this and not buy into the marketing and badging hype.

If they do add a middle tier, it'll most like be an inline 4 with more power. Something like a 335i with about 300hp. I doubt they'd use another B58 in the lineup.

Well there really is no "base" 340i anymore though. The M340i is already fairly well optioned with the M Sport package, more standard features like the M sport brakes and differential and Nav/Live Cockpit Pro/Connected Drive and Carplay.
It sucks that you can't get a reasonably priced B58 option, though. But that's how everyone is doing it now. Audi has been doing it for a while, Mercedes started doing it recently, and now BMW. Basically most cars are the base 2.0T model and anything with a bigger engine requires you to buy the high performance model: either the S4, C43 AMG, or the M340i. Sales-wise it probably makes sense. Much like how it "makes sense" to stop making a manual transmission 3 series. Oh well. |
