Buttonwillow Raceway track report - oil temps

I taught for the BMW CCA last friday at Buttonwillow...and was pleased overall with my oil temps. I was going relatively hard....but holding back a bit since I hadnt been at Buttonwillow for about 6.5-7 years...but as the day progressed I stepped it up a few notches. The highest oil temps I got was a 290 on one session..and I am thinking that having the air conditioning compressor on for that session contributed to the oil temps hitting 290. In other sessions...I think I got to 280 maximum...with the air conditioning OFF. Ambient air temps that day probably ranged from a low of about 59 degrees when we arrived..to a high of maybe 80 or so. I was running partial 100 octane..with my mix probably being in the 93-94 octane range overall. I ran behind a few cars so had restricted airflow for a short period..but mostly I was running with no one in front of me.

I still am considering getting the larger Dinan oil cooler..or something similar if it ever comes out..just to be safe.

not bad at all. for a track day. 280 with no AC is pretty good. and according to BMW can be under there NORMAL operating conditions, according to the owners manual.

One would like to think that BMW would make this overheating issue more of a priority in their Performance parts division. We can buy useless trinkets like CF trim, but no hardware or software for important functional systems. Alpina, Dinan, and the other tuners recognize this critical shortcoming for aggressive driving, but BMW turns a blind eye? Most disappointing. Freude am fahren? Not when it comes to the so-called Performance division.

But hey, looked like you guys had a great time -- watched the vid.

Thanks for the data. Did you run the A/C with the windows up or down?

Is your car manual or slushbox? I seem to recall reading somewhere that slushbox cars seem to run higher oil temps under track conditions, even with the factory oil cooler.

Have you tried taking the kidney grills off? In my car this was good for about 5-10 degrees.

Yeah, I heard we had a few SSTT on cars at Buttonwillow including and instructor. I don't think any of them went into limp mode. My daughter got sick so I couldn't go.

Your coolant temp may have exceeded 243 degrees, or something else is broke.

Steve, did you run the in car diagnostic water temp display to track this variable in relation to your oil temps?

Yes the slushbox runs hotter, only hit 280 on friday but can easily push it harder/higher. Stock.

I was there and my oil got up to 300. However a friend (335i e92 slushbox) only saw 250. He pointed-out that the Colgan bra was covering the oil cooler duct. For my last session I tried to move it out of the way and that brought my temperature down to 290.

No, I didnt even know you could do that. I think the coolant temp is what made these other guys go into limp mode too.

I did monitor my water temps and they never went above 105C even with my oil at 300F.

There was a thread a while back I posted regarding this menu option. It's very helpful to have it run during the entire session.

Nice info! Been getting hot lately so it's good to know what to expect. I guess I was lucky to go to LS back in November when it was nice and cool. I don't remember going over 260.

That is consistent with what I see, similarly equipped. ~280-285.

I was instructing this weekend at Pueblo for the BMW CCA, but had brought my E30M3. Rode in several 335i's:

Auto, no oil cooler, limp mode in 3 laps. Everyone seems to agree this is due to water temps, not oil temps.

Stock sports package, 6MT, slower run groups would see 260-270.

Full out Procede V3, oil cooler, 6MT, full track setup, suspension, tires, upgradded pads-easily fastest car on the track -290. Oh yeah, that car was running the 10W-60 BMW oil.
