E85 with Flash Tune Only?
I've been reading a lot about the virtues of E85 mixes. I just flashed my dme via obd with Active Autowerke with a map for 91 oct. I was wondering, if I wanted to play with E85 mixes, would it be enough to just ask AA to send me a map written for say...E30, load the map and fill 4-5 gallons of E85, and top it of with 91? I'm not running JB4, which I know includes flexfuel wires, but being a noob in this realm, I have no idea what that means or if it's necessary with a BEF.
My car is a 2013 335i PWG. Mods include cp, c/l dp, axleback, and AA flash tune. Any pointers would be appreciated! Thanks!

I believe flash tunes can be used with E85 mixtures. The flex fuel wires are specific to JB4 since it is piggybacking off the system to begin with. In your situation I'd make sure to let AA know that you are using 91 since adding e85 to 91 brings it up to something more like 93 whereas most guys running e85 maps are starting with 93 fuel and adding e85 on top of the 93. Just my two cents.

So to "piggyback" off your question...
I add a few gallons of e85 at every fill up (not right now due to the MHD beta), goal being to increase the octane level. If my calculations are correct, I usually end up with about 94 octane fuel or E29 In a case like mine, do I use the 93 octane maps or the e85 maps? When do you know which map to use? Hope that makes sense...

E85 is one difference with the JB4 and Flashes.. With the Fuel sensors the JB4 will adapt to the level of E85 you put in, while with a flash you will need a map specific to your E mix you plan to use. You can be off a few percent, but if you have an E60 map you can't run E30.
So if flashing stick to a predefined mix and get the map for that, but unless you change maps you are committed to that mix. Mike |

You can run it with either tune but as Mike said with flash you need a specific E85

FWIW, MHD's flash tune should be made public shortly. I've been beta testing a back end flash through MHD while still using my JB4. My primary reason for doing this was to maintain the flexibility the JB4 is known for. That way I can add ethanol whenever I want without the need to reflash.
