X2 Roof Rack prep - no anchor bolts

New here,

Just saw an X2 at my local dealer and noticed it does not have anchor bolts for a roof rack. I think that’s a pretty glaring omission on BMWs part, especially given that this car is geared towards active people who would likely use such great feature...

Like my X4 - you have to order rails.

Ah, thanks. Didn’t know you could do that with the X2.

I made sure to order rails on mine as I will not be putting my ski's in my car. It was a deal breaker if the car didn't have it The dealer probably thought I was nuts.

X4 can have BMW accessory installation - I suppose same goes for X2.

Since innerroof need to be removed, I suggest to let dealer do it.

I can understand it - both X4 and X2 looks better without rails - although I have managed not to look at my rails.

Tjalle - I'm not sure it's about "looking better." BMW has a great system for hiding the interface to mount a roof rack. In fact, I have passed on several other cars because they lack the feature. I think they should include it on ALL cars. It just makes mounting a rack so easy.

I've seen atleast 5 X2s here at work have the rails retrofitted. Not sure on the total cost to do this.

I see your point - but also from BMW perspective:
-to have STD rail preparation, it would cost BMW X miljon $: preparation and x$ cost/vehicle- regardless if rails or not.
-for X2 and X4 only a few percent of customers will need rails. All in all a very high cost for a few customers.

Theoretically all customers buying a non-rail vehicle will gain - in reality - probably - only BMW will gain.

Tjalle - Not including roof prep on an "x" vehicle (which is supposed to stand for a Sports ACTIVITY vehicle) is being penny foolish. It's sorta like charging $750 CDN for Apple Car play on my new M2. That's just being cheap...

Roof prep comes on a 320i, so it is possible to produce a car with the feature and still make a reasonable profit.

It's interesting hearing the different sides of this debate. I live in Canada where the rails are an option. I'm close to ordering an X2 and I will not include the $300 for the rails. I'm surprised that they are not an option in the USA, but the idea of making them standard is a bad one, IMO. There are already too many options that aren't really optional. If you really want the rails, order them as parts and fill your boots.

okay, but would you pay $50 for the anchor bolts if that was an option?

What bolts are you talking about? The OE rails are held on with nuts. If you're not intending to use the OE rails, then you can get bolts anywhere. Not sure what the problem is.

My bad - not bolts. I mean the ports in the roof that enable you to screw a roof rack right into.
