Any views on all season tyres
Had a thought about putting all season tyres (probably Vredstein Quatrac 5s) on the M40 when I get it.
Worried it will be a jack of all trades...and master of none.! Anybody got any views / experience? Thanks Last edited by Rbrown; 02-26-2018 at 01:35 PM.. |

I have not used all season tyres in years. They just are not up to the job in snow. That said, if you can park your car when you have 5cm or more of snow and there are relatively few snow days, then they are a good option. For those of us who have 175 cm or more snow a year, they really are not viable.

Thanks. We have the occasional day of snow - nothing like what you have! Our summers are also very “mild” in Scotland!
I run winter tyres just now (Vredstein Wintrac Extremes) which have been excellent. Just worried the all seasons may not give me all the traction I may need if bad one day.... Decisions decisions...... |

Yes. That is what makes me think I will miss the reassurance the winter tyres give me!
I actually ran the Wintrac Extremes all year round on my ML. With the Scottish climate, I’m half thinking of doing the same with the X3! |

One option you can consider is Nokian All Weather tire.
E.g. WRG3 SUV https://www.nokiantires.com/all-weat...kian-wrg3-suv/ It is basically a winter tire (with the snowflake mountain symbol) designed for year round use. The downside is that tire wear is faster, and I am not sure if it comes in X3 tire sizes. |

I'm 28 and have owned only 5 different cars and always believed in all-season tires until one day I did a youtube video search and after 3 straight hours of watching snow tire videos I realized I'm completely and disgustingly wrong about all-season. they simply should rename those tires no-season. summer/winter combo is what I will do when I get my new vehicle. even in just extremely cold weather with little snow, winter tires are better with flexibility and grips. over all safer to have winter/summer set imo and hopefully by switching the set out each season they will last a bit longer...

I have own 6 bmws, all of them i have purchase all season tires. No issues getting around snow in NY. If you have space to store set of wheels of course it would be nice to have dedicated tires for summer/winter. My commute to work is 1hr on highway roads.
Its all about driver skills not vehicle itself. I had rwd e90 328i with all seasons tires and no issues getting around with snow. |

Depends on your location. Here in NJ, we get a few "big" storms a year but usually you are fine with either RWD plus snow tires, or AWD and all season tires.

Hasn't been a very snowy winter in the mid-atlantic but it has been cold and rainy and my scorpion winters grip better than the DWS 06s on my F25 in the ~35-45F cold and wet.
Apparently they are supposed to grip better in the cold and dry as well but I have't really tested that one.. |

I am a big fan of All season, ordered both my F25 and G01 that way. More about rain for me. I rarely see snow, but plenty of rain. Even my M40i test drive last week was in steady rain. Really depends on how you drive and what weather you deal with.

I keep swinging between winter and all season tyres! I think I will just toss a coin! We have seen quite a bit of snow here this year - but in other years we have seen nothing! As car is coming next week, I just wanted some better grip over what is left of the winter. Suppose I could get the all seasons, keep them on all summer and then if I thought I needed winters, get them when the time comes! Hardly the worst decision to have in the world! |
