First oil change

I picked up my M40i in January. Now with 2000 miles on it, I thought it would be a good time for an initial oil change (I do an early oil change with all my new cars). I picked up a BMW oil filter (part number 114285838) and 7 quarts of Castrol 0-20. I used a floor jack on the left front jacking point and a jackstand under the A arm. There is a round cover on the undershield that rotates counterclockwise to expose the 17mm drainplug. After removing the plug, I put the car back on the ground and let the oil drain for a couple of hours (another thing I like to do that a dealer won't). Meanwhile, up top, the filter is located on the driver's side of the #6 cylinder near the firewall. I used a 1 1/4" socket with a swivel and extension to remove the cap. Changing the filter was simple and replaced the cap. Going back under, I replaced the drainplug and cover and filled the motor with almost 7 quarts of oil. The motor takes 6.5 liters or 6.9 quarts. I'll let the dealer do the next oil change when they will normally do the first.

This very low mileage oil change has been on my to do list but the weather in Chicago never cooperated (unheated detached garage).

Im now at 3400 miles . This includes 660 drive from dealer back home. Purchase in December . I think I'm going to do it in the next week or so.

I have my e90 on April/ nov schedule (diy)

Thanks for that write up. I wonder how long the dealer leaves the car level while allowing the oil to drain too

At 1200 miles I am having them do the oil change. Unfortunately, I trust myself only with the cheap Asian made cars. It’s so simple. But I pop the hood on my brand new bmw and I’m hesitant to touch. Lol

I do have an oil analysis kit from blackstone labs I intend on asking the mechanic at my dealer to sample some for me to send in and see what they find.

At 2k miles.. should be pretty clean. I will occasionally use a Motor Flush product like:

Motor Flush by Gunk at Amazon

It's fairly fluid. Pour into warm engine and idle 5 min before draining oil. You cannot drive once you've put into engine until after you've changed oil. I've done this many times over past 25+ years. Makes me feel good.

that's a fair assumption. I would do the same if BMW said there was no engine break in period and the engines came with about 500-1000 miles on them from testing at the factory...buuuuuuuuuttttt since they don't, I think many here feel changing the oil and flushing out any possible residual metallic contaminants can't hurt. especially if it's only 50-80 bucks.

I paid $148 at my indy shop, BMW Excluservice for our break in oil change. Small price to pay. Mike Miller recommends it, so I'll go with Mike.

Fair enough, I would probably do this as well if I planned to keep the car for a long time. However I usually try to dump them once I get out of the warranty period

It is in Rockville. It works for me since while I live in Leesburg, I work in Gaithersburg. I come over White's Ferry everyday. BMW Excluservice is fabulous. They do all work on my BMW's once the warranty is over. I have a JB4 for my F32 that they are going to install soon.

xDrive 30i Break-in Oil Change

I ordered a 2018 xdrive30i and hope to have delivery by the end of April, 2018.

I am planning on doing a break-in oil change around 1500 miles. I was surprised that the oil is 0W-20. Is this for real?

Also, where is the oil filter cap on the turbo 4 cylinder engine (B46). I can not find any DYIs on this engine.
Thanks

Wally

got my oil changed at dealer today. bad news, I forgot to ask for them to put some oil in my blackstone labs kit so I could see if the oil change was indeed worth it....the great news, my dealer only charged me 89 dollars!! I was expecting at LEAST 120-140.

yea, don't know what's up with that. I felt lucky. maybe they were running a deal for april. the guy asked twice, "you sure you want an oil change? it's not due for one..." lol I told him I was a little more picky and just wanted it done since she's at the end of engine break in period and I realize I will have to pay.

Service Rep talked me out of doing it. Would have been $89. Who says "No" to money? 1700 miles right now might try another dealer or just let the car be the car.

Changed the oil today. Nothing special but I made a mess when taking out oil filter from the canister. Fml. Probably won’t ever do this at home again.

Congrats on the new ride! BMW has officially recommended AMSOIL as a choice years ago. I've found that engine oil alone gives me ~1MPG better. Dealers are everywhere and will ship to your door for free. You'll want to run a bottle of engine flush before replacing the oil though (about 15 min and no driving after - if the dealer is doing it, pulling it around the lot is not an issue, just get there early and do the flush).
