DME Load Target vs Boost Target

Just a theoretical question for anyone who understands this better than me.

If our DME's are aiming for a load target rather than a boost target, can you get gains by changing parts without doing a tune?

I.e. I have a bone stock N55, and I mount a decent FMIC, and catless DP, and leave everything else stock, including stock tune. Will I not see any gains?

You will see gains with mods and stock tune.

You'll get a lot of throttle intervention with a catless dp and stock tune. The boost control needs adjusting for the lower back pressure.

You will gain power by doing mods with no tune, not much though.

Theoretically, if you use higher octane or parts that cause less restriction with a torque controlled ECU, it will advance timing towards optimal and use lower load targets and therefore less boost to achieve the same torque, assuming you were previously achieving target torque.

However, at modest stock torque, load and boost, the stock parts are not so restrictive as when you turn up the boost, and the combustion is not as knock limited by pump fuel.

So the mods really support higher torque, load and boost and come into their own then.

You won’t see gains with an ic. You may see small gains with a dp

Once you get a tune it will allow your parts to work together and that is when the value is unlocked.

Upgraded Intercooler really prevents power loss due to heat soak. There are some gains but the BIGGEST gain is prevention of heat soak and power loss in back to back pulls or aggressive driving.

Thanks for your responses, this is what I figured. Back in the old days when I had my fox body 5.0 Mustang, you could slap a set of headers on it and enjoy noticeable gains. I'm guessing it's because those old fuel infection systems simply measured air flow with the mass air meter and would compensate for the extra flow. These new systems with controlled load targets necessitates a tune to reap the benefits of your mods.
