Correcting LCI cluster scratches

Hi guys,

There seems to be a bit of an issue with the LCI instrument cluster in that it scratches far too easily.

Has anyone tried to correct these scratches themselves? I have a fair few on mine and it’s driving me insane.

I'd be interested to know of a solution as well.

I talked to my detailer about it last weekend and because of the matte finish they say it'll be a bitch to make look right. Suggestion is compressed air only.

The more and more I look it seems once the damage is done it is irreversible. One option could be to polish/remove the current anti glare protection and have another anti glare film applied to the cluster.

Then compressed air or a feather duster to remove dust in the future.

Does this eminently scratchable problem with the gauge cluster only occur on the LCI models, or are all the M2s involved? All the 2 series? Or is it even a wider problem affecting all the models?

Pre-LCI's don't have this issue, we have a glossy plastic screen in front of our gauges.

I saw a 2014 i8 recently and the cluster was beat to shit. I'm assuming it's the same matte material.

Ive read comments that the pre LCI screens had too much glare.. Was this fragile mat finish cluster in reaction to that I wonder. Trade one evil for another.

I would like to know this too. A recent coughing fit behind the wheel has left its mark

I'm still fighting bmw on this as they caused the scratches. If they don't replace, I plan to use some novus plastic polish to completely remove the anti glare coating which should restore it.

I blow the dust off of mine with my air compressor weekly. If there any spots left from something wet that dried on the cluster, I slightly moisten the fluffiest MF towel I can find and wipe the spots off with that.

I have a few very, very mild scratches, but they can only be seen if I shine an LED flashlight at the cluster and contort myself. In other words, my method seems to be working well; that said, there's no flipping reason that the matte finish should scratch so easily.

I ended up retrofitting an LCI cluster. Super glad I saw this thread beforehand.

Only using compressed air. Never touch it with anything. Not even a microfiber.

Yeah I saw this before even taking delivery of my car and nonetheless I've got scratches. The only folks who have ever had it are a bmw dealer in Lucerne and my PPF installer :/

Has anyone tried Novus on their LCI cluster? Started a new thread about Novus specifically for the LCI cluster here, and would love to hear whether it has worked for you or not!

Correcting LCI cluster scratches

Used 1 to clean off but really only 2 removes the scratches.

Under most lighting the scratches are gone but in heavy glare situations you will notice that the matte finish is gone from where the buffing is done.

However, I rather have that then the scratches in your face most of the time.

I had this and I polished it up with really good results.

I removed the cluster by removing the two torx screws at the top then un clipping the two cables and because it's plastic it's really soft so quite easy to polish out.

I used menzerna 3500 polish and a micro fibre cloth and just take your time you can see them getting smaller and smaller maybe took 29 mins all in

why the hell isn't there a plastic cover on this like the pre-LCI cluster? Seems like an idiotic design decision
