Something sounds fishy

Hello!

Let me start off by saying I have no clue what I’m looking at when it comes to tires and rims! So I picked up a 328xi from an auction and it has 19” rims on it. Rims on the front are 9” wide and 9.5” wide in the rear. Tires in the front are 225/35/19 and 225/40/19 in the rear. All tires are the same brand continental extreme contact dws. Is there something extremely wrong with this set up?

Yes

Rolling diameter on the 225/40 tire is bigger by 22.5mm

Considering your car is x drive, I would keep a square set up or go with the manufacturer recommendation that is on the door card.

To match the front size of 225/35 overall diameter you should go with 265/30 or 255/30. 265/30 being the closest match with consideration that it will clear the fender and tire wont rub.

Also, update your info on the side under your username to show what year and chassis your car is e90, e92, e93.

Added the information! Than you for the response! So it turns out the width of the front rim is actually 8” and the rear width is 8.5”. The vehicle also has 15mm spacers in the front and 25mm spacers in the rear. The offset of the front rim is 36 and the offset of the rear is 47. Does this change the specs of the rear tire that I need to match the rolling diameter of the front setup?

Those things have nothing to do with the rolling diameter.

Those would be staggered wheels, common on E90s. Tire size would usually be (front) 225/40R18 and (rear) 255/35R18 on 18" wheels. But you can run a square setup where all tires are the same size. The main thing is that the tire diameter is very close for xDrive cars or you will damaged the AWD system.

The only way a width of the rim is going to affect the rolling diameter is if the tire is stretched to compensate for the wide wheel.

Given your current setup, 19"x8"(front) and 19"x8.5(rear) your best bet is to go with a 255/30/19 tire in the rear (that's stock size recommendation by bmw for that size rims). 265/30 tire may be a bit too wide for 8.5" wide rim.

You also have to keep in mind that the previous owner put those rear spacers in to make the wheel more flush with the quarter panel. 25mm = 1inch. He might have preferred that look and therefore opted for going with a 225/40 tire to avoid rubbing and maybe he thought that 8.5 inch wheel would stretch the tire and compensate for the taller sidewall.

Are you planning on keeping the spacers?

Yes I plan on keeping the spacers. Should I still be ok with 255/30/19?

Can I just get 225/35/19 all around? Or will the rear rim not fit on a 225/35/19?

You'll be ok. Rear tire will slightly be stretched.
