Heads Up Display Reflection
Anyone else a little annoyed by the HUD reflection? I love the HUD and now can't imagine not having it...but mine has a line on the window that almost makes it look like a crack in the windshield that is really pretty bright in certain light etc. Wondering if tinting the front windshield with a very light tint would help?? Anyone else run into that or have ideas?

I've seen this too. At first I did think I had a crack in the windshield but realized it moves with the sun and orientation. I really haven't looked into it and not too much of a distraction for me.

I haven't noticed it at all but then again, I wear polarized sunglasses and can't even really see the HUD on it's brightest setting. Have to tried change the height to see if that helps?

Have you tried the rotation settings to make the HUD visible with your sunglasses?

I've noticed a faint line in the windshield but only after turning up the brightness so it's higher than default. At default brightness I don't notice it at all.

I've noticed the same. On the similar Audio SQ5, the "rotation" is specifically for the polarization. The BMW seems to tilt the display instead -- not so useful.

I have the HUD mirror reflection as well.
Recently tinted front windshield & side windows 70%, and really no change. |

I too have the reflection, when the sun is shining. Since that seems to be very rare these days, I have satisfied myself that it is just a design flaw and that I do not need to worry that my windscreen is chipped.

Dang. Ok. That was what I was really wondering, if the front tint would help at all. I was reluctant to tint the front, even a clear or light tint, just because I'd heard some on forums talk about seeing halos at night etc with the tint up front and oncoming lights. The reflection isn't terrible and certainly not bad enough to make me upset to drive the car...just a little annoying when the crack-like like is there in bright sun.

Maybe not so much of a design flaw since, generally speaking, I'm sure it happens in most vehicles with HUD. My 2017 F-Pace had HUD reflections too, and it was actually much worse than the BMW. I've also noticed it in the Mercedes GLC43 AMG and Audi SQ5 that I test drove. They all have it to some degree or another.

Had the HUD in my 2015 435 and had no problem with this in any condition. When driving off the lot yesterday with our new M40i it was immediately noticeable due to sun placement. It’s not terrible but it is mildly annoying. I feel like maybe there’s a piece of metal in the HUD casing reflecting light that could be covered to fix the problem.

Yes, it’s bothersome. BMW should look into it (or rather, at it, since if someone there had seen it in production/testing I assume it would have been fixed).

Suspect it has always been there for us but I didn't notice it until our trip yesterday after having read this thread.
It was hard for me to tell while driving, and I honestly haven't thought to check since we arrived on our vacation, but can anyone tell if it is reflecting off the bottom of the HUD glass where a beveled edge might be? If so, could a very thin strip of black felt or something similar block that edge but not the informational part? Since it is in a depression it would seem like gravity alone would keep such in place without any need for adhesive. Or possibly black plastic etc instead of felt? Just a thought. |

Ha. Sorry to be the one to point it out...now you'll see it always. I do think it's some sort of metal trim type of piece that could maybe be covered up some. The regular reflection I get having to have that since it's a screen projecting onto the glass etc. I may look at it closer to see what could work. |

Heads Up Display reflection? Isn't that an oxymoron? (April Fools Day was three weeks ago)
