Cool Frank van Meel, the BMW M Division boss who gives us more…

To mark the release of the new M2 Competition, the M chief gave me the lowdown on the story behind the brand new family member to the M range.

I will lucky enough to meet him while I got the chance to check out my new car in an undisclosed area. You will read my complete interview on DriveTribe.

Read it all here: https://drivetribe.com/p/frank-van-m...SUaDzCuaHKrHSA

If you have any questions with regards to the review, please feel free to point them to me and I hope I can answer them for you.

GIVE ME CSL 6MT or give me nothing

MR: Would you have kept the base M2 available for sale, if the WLTP would not have played any role in the decision making process?

FvM: Yes, the production of the M2 LCI would not come to an end this summer if the WLTP did not play a role. We would have continued the M2 next to the M2 Competition and both cars would have been built alongside each other at the factory in Leipzig, Germany.

thanks for asking this clarifying question.

CSL will not happen in this model line up. It would intervene with the M3/M4 release.

They cannot release a M2 CSL in the same year the new M4 drops. Marketing and sales wise not smart...

Also the M4 CSL will be return of the CSL brand, not the M2. That is what I think, but time will tell what will be reality.

I do not believe this will happen in this model series. However I do feel and believe there will be another limited model saying goodbye to the M2 F87 model series before the GXX model arrives.

The M CEO did not want to comment on this, but I think there will be one more as rumored the last year. What that model will be? No idea... I do not see it arriving before the end of 2019 or early 2020.

MR
Well they cannot (read: are choosing not) NOW.. since the cars weigh the same and really have few differentiators..

(Per the article all that remains is wheelbase, carbon fiber roof, adaptive suspension and ceramic brakes )

Wait.. NEW M4 drop? What year are you anticipating for this? Current production is through 2020ish right?

We are looking 2020! New M3 is expected to land in 2019 and M4 shortly after... That is roughly the same time the 2-series might go. They will overlap.

So based on that interview it would seems the S55 remains unchanged and just the exhaust system was newly developed. That mean we have the exact same turbos? Did you get into the "weight optimized" turbos mentioned in the initial leak?

EDITED FOR 1M owners

MR: What would you like to say to the owners that currently drive a 1M? What should they do? Should they move to the M2 Competition?

FvM: First of all, I would like to say; you have made the best possible decision. Great choice! If you feel like it, cannot resist the change or you are in the market for a new car, then please do upgrade to the new M2 Competition. You will love it! If you are not, then please stay with your beloved 1M. Enjoy it, drive it, make it your own and be sure to keep that M smile on your face through every single mile or kilometer. In the end, both cars are quite different, but have an extremely strong character...

The M2 Competition looks to be a great option for those looking for an M car......

I prefer the looks (inside and out) of the regular M2 than the M2 Comp .. but neither appear to be the car for me.

Perhaps for the NEXT generation of 2 series BMW will actually employ some weight saving tactics to their entry level M car..

- Are the turbos the same ones that are found on the S55 for the M3/4?

MR: Same

- A picture from the EVO magazine article appears to show the M2c has a different looking muffler than what's on the current M2 or M3/4. Is it a bespoke muffler for the M2c?

MR: Yes, it is a brand new exhaust system developed for the car.

- Is the exhaust a single cat back as found on the current M2 or a dual cat back as found on the M3/4?

MR: Dual as on M3/4

- Was any engineering done to further tune the exhaust note of the S55 for the M2c?

MR: Nope, only a brand new exhaust was developed, which I haven't heard properly.

- Is the engine oil cooler located underneath the engine as found on the M3/4?

MR: The set up is similar as the M3/4.

- The EVO article states that the M2c weighs 55kg more than the outgoing M2. What is the weight distribution for the M2c?

MR: This has not been communicated.

- The EVO article states the following, "...while at the rear the M division has used ball joints in the suspension for greater stiffness and precision." Can you please expand on this?

MR: There is less roll in the vehicle while steering. The base M2 had this quite a lot. The car stays more flat and is more compliant on the road without loosing comfort levels. The package is not as hard as the M2 with M Competition suspension. The suspension is further tuned to enhance the ride quality.

- Will 18" inch wheels be offered that will fit with upgraded brake option 2NH?

MR: Both wheel options fit the M Sport brake kit.

Nope, because I feel that has nothing to do with something that is new but just marketing bla bla bla. Turbos as the same on the M3/M4 where they are also weight optimized :P

"...I can ensure you that we looked thoroughly into positioning the vehicle between the outgoing M2 LCI and the base M4... The base price will not increase drastically." So, now we know. LOL. Also, thanks, great write up!

Unless reviews say it sucks compared to previous model (highly doubt it) M2c in black. Have had a deposit and contract since last year.

@MR. the interview with the "Frank" person was very useful.

He also still insisted that the BMW M lineup will be split across base, Competition, CS and CSL (Not GTS). I find this very encouraging.

I was hoping you would ask him if the CS was then called competition or if there were 2 different models from the beginning. He might've probably not answered but thought it would be worth a shot.

Let's hope what is stopped starts moving again.... quickly.
