This car is not perfect

Age, growing children and a wife that is getting more and more annoyed about climbing up out of my various (current M2) coupes forced me to finally give in to 4 doors and seats that are more than a few inches off the road.
The M5 is my very first sedan

The map zoom is the opposite direction from the M2 and my previous 3 seris, why couldn’t they keep it the same way.
The seat base doesn’t tilt back as much as any of the 3 series do.
The seat massage feels like I’m crapping my pants continuously.
The loud exhaust comes back on after you restart the car and my neighbors probably hate me every morning.
The fucking radio doesn’t turn off until you lock the doors.
The speed limit on the fancy electronic display cannot be disabled, (I’m driving a 600hp car, do you really think I need a constant reminder of the speed limit?)
The electronic handbrake is shit, takes forever to release when you press the button.
The HUD reverts back to normal after a restart even when i select M mode on the settings.
There is no cargo net in the trunk so now unless I fill the massive space with stuff anything I put in there gets slammed around in the trunk when I’m driving.
The lane following feature is lame, if I use this feature a lot i’d expect to get pulled over for being drunk, it weaves between the lines and doesn’t do corners without stepping outside the lane.
The car gets about 10 mpg when I’m driving it in the city (I just hope everyone else goes electric to keep gas cheaper)
The wing mirrors don’t do well in the blind spot, they got rid of the curve at the end of the mirror like I have on my M2, now I have to rely on the electronics and a little yellow triangle.
The car has gone in for a service for a fault just 96 hours after I picked it up brand new.
This car is fucking huge, 16” long, barely fits in the garage.

This car has the power and agility to let you effortlessly move into any position like every other car is standing still.
This cars engine power is intoxicating.
This car raises the middle finger to everyone and everything around it.
This car is not perfect, this car is fucking awesome.

Thankyou M5 for turning a midlife crisis into a pleasure.

nitpicking, lol. a lot of that is just the BMW way. at least they didn't put the unlock button in the middle of the dash and made more stuff user selectable.

They made the unlock button better on the M5. On the M2 it is hidden in a myriad of other buttons in the middle console of the car, its easier to just reach over and pull the passenger door handle than find the freakin button. On the M5 it is on the driver’s door so you can unlock the other doors before you climb in.
My M2 is a driver’s car, fuck the passengers, they are just an afterthought.
The M5 tries hard to make the passengers feel like BMW gives a shit, they don’t of course, but the passengers do notice the little improvements and are fooled by the extra sense of caring.

I agree. I have come from a F80 CP and the F90 is NOT a M3. There are many things about the M3 I loved and now miss. I still question if I have done the right thing.

Age is probably the only reason I moved to the F90. I had a half day (BMW) on the track with the F90 and after a few hot laps it needed a rest. It (engine) was overheating, and brakes were cracking while cooling. A lot of aromas from overheated various mechanical components present. The M3 could do that (track work) all day long and still be up for more.

I need to give it time but F90 requires less skill to drive than a F80 (in my opinion with DSC ON). I just need to get to know a new driving buddy. I know I will find that what it is, and what it represents suits me better that the F80, but I still miss a lot that the F80 has to offer.

The F90 is awesome.

I test drove the M5 recently, and agreed with your findings, in about the first mile . How good is this car ?, it fits your description to a tee, with a capital "F" . I couldnt care less if this car, isnt pumped up, in your face, raging with attitude. For those that are in the know, it is superb, again with a capital "F". This is the first BMW, i desperately want over a Porsche, just waiting for the Comp Pack, and a better financial deal, and them im in !!!, great post

Interesting post; there is no doubt that this is not your kid's M2. My question, and perhaps it's better suited to a new posting on this forum, is what will the experience be like for a M4 driver who drives only in M2 mode and occasionally in M1 mode and who beats the shit out of corners and routinely doubles the speed limit on rolling, rural roads moving to the M5? I love the responsiveness and tightness of the M4, but, perhaps like the OP, I am rounding out in terms of years and physique, and I find the cabin a bit cramped for my 6'3" 205# frame? In short, how does the 5 drive compared to the 4?

The M5 is definitely the gentlemans express, and in this carnation, will be trebling your speed limit . The car is bigger than the M4 without question, but hides its size well enough on the road. The grip it now possesses in 4wd ,, is confidence instilling, and has you feeling like you are tearing chunks out of the tarmac. I feel the damping of the chassis is leagues ahead of a standard M4s suspension, and combined with all that power, and grip, this car is one you must sample for yourself.

I’ve never owned an M4 but I did spend some time in one at Thermal with BMW driving the crap out of it last year.
My M2 has the Dinan big turbo upgrade, almost as much power as a stock M4 with less weight, but turbo lag is kinda bad.
As you describe I do beat the shit out of the car, when the wife is not present of course as she makes unpleasant noises at me when i do this with her in the car.

I’ve only driven the M5 on the road and not very hard, but my impression is that it is more responsive to the throttle than the M4. It gets around corners at least as well, but the front wheel drive makes it feel a bit weird, it doesn't get that little bit of drift around corners that it would in my M2, probably just because I’m not used to it yet and I’m treating it nice during break in.

My first day of driving was capped by having trouble getting into my garage. I have a small spot as I share the garage with all the shit the family can’t throw out and my beer fridge.

The car is over 16” long!, it is huge.
I had a lot of trouble judging the distance on the passenger side of the car to the garage wall and ended up nudging the fridge a few inches with the front fender (car, fridge and beer survived with no damage)
When parked I have about 8 inches on both sides of the car (except for the driver’s door) and about 4 inches in front, the car is so scared I’m going to hit something that there are collision alarms going off like crazy and most of the little collision indicates on the camera view are red. It would be nice if the car would be a little less sensitive with proximity alarms.

So what am I trying to say. When driving the car I don’t think you’ll feel a loss as far as performance goes, in fact it is a lot better than all the other Ms (at least in my limited experience).
The cabin feel is quite difference, it is not a sports coupe, you are higher off the road and the seat isn’t as bucket like.
The car is physically huge and if you get one, like me you’ll have to get used to this, I am and I can now zip in and out of my tiny parking space and have only nudged my fridge once since my first attempt.

Oh, and this car it hot, in the temperature way I mean, after you shut it off the fan goes into overdrive for several mins, very loud in the garage, I thought the engine was still running the first time. It then takes hours to cool down and leave my garage toasty hot, when summer comes I’ll have to leave the door open to let it cool, annoys the crap out of my 14 yo son, he has his computer set up in another corner of the garage and my arriving home disturbs his gaming, however being in bmw driver mode I’m able to shrug off his complaints and they have on where or how I park.

It’s worse than everything you said.
I picked mine up today. I went from an 11 year old E92 to this POS F90.
Within half hour I get pulled over. First time in 8 years.
“Do you know how fast you were going?” “I do not officer.”
And he saw the damn grin in my face and nailed me.
My wife’s pissed. And she hates the color too.

It's less edgy than my M3 though I prefer a 'proper' hand brake as well.....

Heh, I expect I’ll get a ticket in this car, been 13+ years since my last one, I’m likely going to get one for speeding.

You may want to print several copies of your initial post for the officer to read,...he (...or she), just may give you a break! Happy motoring....LOL!

Now that was entertaining. Laughing about the fitting in your garage issue.

How is the rear seat space?

Odd, are their mounts in the trunk for a cargo net?

More Photos.....
