Downpipe ruined exhaust note

I first installed the full catback AWE exhaust with midpipe on my 2014 435 xdrive and loved the exhaust note. However, I wanted more horsepower so then I had the VSRF downpipe installed. Now I've got drone, it's too loud and overly raspy. The AWE exhaust by itself had a nice deep tone. Any suggestions other than removing the downpipe?

i think your only options are change the downpipe or change the exhaust.

Put the resonated midpipe back in and give that a shot. Many report axelback, resonayed midpipe and DP is much more civilized

You can buy a catted down pipe or put the stock midpipe to minimized the noise

Removing a downpipe would make it much worse. I guess the only solution is to fit a downpipe that was developed in conjunction with the engine and probably cost tens, if not thousands of dollars in development.

The OEM resonator in the midpipe plays a big role in reducing rasp in the exhaust note. Even muffler delete + catless downpipe will have little rasp (supposedly). Having a shop weld you in a resonator would reduce rasp (and drone)

Unfortunately, I no longer have the stock midpipe. I gave away the stock exhaust. How much would it cost to have a reputable shop weld in a resonator?

Cheap resonator is $30 plus likely an hour of labor to install, so $100-120. A quality round muffler like a magnaflow magnapack, dynomax or similar is about $65 and the same on labor, and will sound much better.

Awe doesn't use the valve, it only has a section to mount the wiring but there is no actual valve. I have a awe axleback waiting to be installed with my high flow catted DP / stock mid section. After research many people have said AWE axleback is better suited with a aftermarket downpipe. Seems even with a high flow catted DP the mid section makes it abit loud.

Unfortunately it's the downpipe that adds power and everything past the DP doesn't. Always try DP + Stock exhaust first. DP + aftermarket exhaust often has rasp and drone.

This is exactly what bkkeys ended up doing.

It's too bad you gave away the stock midpipe
Maybe you can buy one cheap in the Classifieds section.

Hi,

Yea, it was too loud for me when I did the downpipe, but now it's awesome. I have bootmod3 and I did the cold start delete, so my car is neighbor friendly

Thanks for sharing the video!

So either I get a shop to install a resonator or I swap out the AWE midpipe for a stock midpipe? Thanks for the advice guys.

Ugh, hate saying this due to OP situation yet totally agree. Know the OP is where he is, yet an EXHAUST SYSTEM is just that. As we all know, loud is not always faster. There is design and engineering to truly optimize a system that works best with your engine tune... and secondary how you desire it sounds (priority in whichever order you prefer).

OP, sorry to hear of your problem. (Sigh) Life lesson learned.

Switching from catless to catted will get rid of the drone and raspy tone? I just want it to sound the way it did with the AWE axleback and midpipes.

Yes it will tone the sound down ... I think this would be your best options, less rasp and you get to keep the additional power

Related kind of.....I have mppk (stacked with jb+) and mpe, stock dp, stock midpipe on my xdrive. Want more bark and burble, should I cut the resonator out? Will it sound like shit? My car is CPO, will bmw hit me for that or overlook it?

Anybody with a sound clip of mpe and res-delete on mpe with xdrive?
