340i One Take
For those that aren't aware, The Smoking Tire Youtube Channel does quick test drives of a bunch of cars and record their reviews, called "One Takes." Today's video was a 340i. They actually did another one in the past that was mostly stock, but it's always nice to get their unfiltered feedback. Too bad it wasn't Matt Farrah driving but still a good review.

This is a nice car... but the owner's motivations are somewhat perplexing.
Bad tries, shot brakes, stock suspension, lots of power, Angeles Crest = a bad time. "I would love to do suspension, but it's a lease." yet has all these bolt ons and a piggyback? As soon as I took delivery of my 340i I took it up to SGR and the Angeles Crest with stock suspension and tires. Like the video mentions, the handling is fine, but it's not going to keep up with true high performance cars without modifications. Most people would be fine with that, it's a very capable car... HOWEVER, when you go ahead and ADD more power and torque to this vehicle, it's going to be downright frustrating. I can't for the life of me imagine how unsatisfying the car would be on the Crest with stock suspension and tires with that much power. It sounds good, it goes fast in a straight line... but if you can't turn the wheel, it's just not fun for me.

Again: stock suspension? but at least it looks like he got proper rubber. This is the second time One Take mentions the "right now!" aspect of the F80 probably because they drove it in Sport +, which IMHO is too jumpy. Sport mode is more predictable and manageable without losing performance. It does sound good though, and better than a stock F80 and I might even say better than my MPE.

Weird because in the video the owner puts the car in sport+ but THEN presses the traction button once...

It's been awhile... what does that do?

It pretty much just takes it out of sport mode, Its like Tie your shoe to then untie it.

I've stopped watching "The Smoking Tire" but just watched this video cuz it's a 3 series. Reaffirms why I don't watch them anymore. I learn and enjoy more from the knowledgeable members here.
It's a sleeper cuz so little has been done to it. It's like every other person in the B58 engine thread here. It was such a waste of time doing a review of this.

Here is Matt's One Take on a stock 340 from August 2016 for anyone who has not seen it. The owner is a Forum member.

I'm on the other side of the fence because while the car isn't the craziest performer, it is still plenty capable. It's not like it was sliding around, he just said it had more body roll then he'd expect. So even though I modified my suspension before adding power, I don't think the car is lacking that much in stock form. Sure it can be improved but tires would get you farther than some coilovers. Who knows, maybe the owner had all-seasons on it? |

I'm confused with a jb4 on a lease. But, he can't do coils. I hope he doesn't spin a bearing or something and they interrogate the DME..... If the engine breaks, don't take it to the dealer...
The first vid with the blue car was better. Before I picked mine up I probably watched that 6 or 7 times. The owner there was well educated on the car. |

Nah I got that part. I just have a hard time believing that stock MSport suspension and summer tires can't handle and extra 30-40hp. Or maybe the 4 series is that much stiffer than the 3 series because I didn't feel my car was that bad. I mostly modified my suspension for looks and to get more camber up front.

The exhaust, Downpipe, and mid pipe are cheaper to install at a garage. Springs and coilovers aren’t that expensive but install is a pricey. When u do it yourself, springs are cheap. Anyways, when u can boast about having around 400hp and 400 tq by adding together hp gains from each part that sounds way better than “I got ohlins r&t coil overs

They don't pick cars, they only have access to cars that are offered to them. I'm sure if they were presented a better build, they would've taken it. That's not to say that this build is bad at all, but you get what I mean.

Neither of these guys knows what they are doing turning off traction control puts it back into comfort hence the body roll. Not ideal for canyon driving. You're not getting the benefit of any tune in comfort. Also, putting it in sport tightens the suspension unlike what the driver was saying.

Pretty sure I don't have adaptive and it soaks up the bumps in comfort but rides harder in sport. I just got the mppsk and have been using comfort more when I want quiet exhaust. It rides better than many non sporty cars on all seasons though I have 19s with pirellis. I believe adaptive can adjust dynamically whisky you drive. I've said in a previous post that I have ghetto adaptive suspension I have to turn on and off manually. The difference in dampening is like night and day. |

It doesn't say I have adaptive on my sticker but it rides harder in sport and much softer in comfort so not sure what I have. This is like the debate people were having with the sport vs. sport + not being any different. That was true with the 335 but not with the 340. I can choose between chassis and drivetrain vs. chassis only in sport mode, pretty sure that doesn't just mean the steering.
