Break in service

So finally had breakin service. Felt more responsive. Not sure how to describe it. Felt like it’s spooled faster.

I’ve read some people think it does some peoples don’t. What’s your sense? What do they actually do at the break in?

Mainly change fluids. Engine oil and differential oil.

Did they install the new Istep revision? Most of these cars are under recall for the dash issue and receive the update. Trying to keep track of how many lose the overrun snap , crackle and pops after.

Only the early 2018s are under recall. My December build was not. I didn’t get an update.

How did you drive your M prior to its first break in service? Did you keep the revs low below a certain threshold rev range in each gear? I've been wanting to go past 4K rpms but didn't want to stress my vehicle as I've only put 43miles @ 80+ kms on it since collecting it from the port.

Just had my break in service yesterday @1,700kms on the odo. I kept the rpms under 4500 throughout. I did a couple of WOT runs today and did not notice any power difference, just held the gears longer. My AWRON said peak power on first run was 352 and 371 on the second run. I assume this is at the flywheel?? Torque was 510 and 512 respectively. Not sure how/what it is measuring to be honest...just installed the gauge yesterday as well. Butt Dyno definitely didn't pick up any extra horses though.

I took mine into the local dealer because of this diff noise. 800KM on it. The head mechanic drove it like he stole it. Hit 5,500rpm numerous times. Hard acceleration..etc...
What can I say....These things are tough....maybe we are a little too soft...

Had the diff noise, it could be clearly heard at very low speed. Now I just did break in service is still there, but less loud. I think this is normal for this car. If not, will use next service call to complain.

Just had my break in service and haven’t noticed any performance increase. To be honest I varied the rev range during break in upto 5.5k and 90% of the time drove in manual sport+

Nice... thanks for the tip. Now I'm looking forward to get back home and subtly rape the daylights out of my engine and MT.

Thinking of running Motul 300V 5w20 and 75w90 in the differential. What fluids did you pump in?

I typically keep the rpm below 5k during break in service. I’m not saying the car was faster at WOT. It felt like it was spooling faster 2-5k rpm on gears 2 and 3.

The only reason I notice this was on my last car, when I installed a Turbo Outlet Pipe. It allowed the spool to be slightly faster so this was similar.

Maybe it’s just in my head but I don’t usually drive my car evidence by a 5 month breakin. But drove it for 40 miles to the dealer pre service and 40 miles back. It was the first thing I noticed. I wasn’t looking for a difference.

That noise is interesting. I drove another members stick shift and it was there but way less noisy - his car had like 15k miles on it. Mine is crazy loud when I feather in the clutch under power (like 2500rpm) . Happens in every gear. Must be the diff and the breakin fluid must make it louder.

YEA.. I'm an August '17 build so Im under the recall.. Just dont want to lose my exhaust overrun pops and crackles. Im not due in til September for annual oil change and hopefully, we'll have some better idea by then if the Istep upgrade that comes with this dash recall remedy really loses these most valuable sounds!

My car had the dash/gauge cluster software update back in Nov at port when shipping back after ED; my car sounds the same back here in the states as it did while driving during the ED trip.
