Straight Pipe annoying *banging noise*

Hey guys,

So my 335i is straight piped from the muffler to the resonator. But right around the resonator is a black bar, which I have no idea what it is, and the resonator part of my piping bangs into that black bar all the time. And the sound it makes is annoying as hell!

It seems as if the pipes are too low and that may be causing it to bang into the black thing. But, the tips seem to be perfect height. So, I'm trying to figure out the solution to this and can't seem to think of anything. Figured you guys are experts and could help me out.

I have attached pictures and will mark the exact location I'm referring to.

Thanks guys!

just wrap it with some exhaust wrap and it should stop it from banging/vibrating from the bar. otherwise you'll have to take it to the exhaust shop.

Thanks for the reply and that sounds like a great idea! And to clarify, I noticed that the pipe is actually touching the black bar and constantly in contact with it. So, every time I drive over a road that is anything but perfect, it causes it to bounce off it, which causes the banging noise.

Now, about the exhaust wrap, if I wrap the pipe with it, do you think it will just make the bouncing noise quieter or make it completely silent? Or do you think it will it make it such a tight fit against the bar, that it has no more space to bounce?

And if I ended up taking it to the exhaust shop, what do you think would be their solution? Adding another clamp to raise the pipe so that it doesn't touch the black bar? Or bending the black bar so that the pipe can't reach it?

A muffler shop needs to check your exhaust hangers or cut and move the pipe. You should have about an inch or so clearance from the brace.(black bar)

I can almost guarantee you that when the cut out the resonator they let the pipes hang too low/didn't support it enough during welding, so now it's sagging. Go back to the shop if you can and have them fix it properly. This is kind of support they should use to hold the piping in place while they install the new piece. Mine was for a muffler delete but same idea.

agree. that's a poor install, the pipe should easily clear that bar.

if they won't fix it, some exhaust wrap is probably a good idea, hell, some duct tape wrapped around the bar enough times might add some additional cushion to eliminate the noise.

I believe duct tape or exhaust wrap would be effective, but I agree that the shop should've done a proper job the first time. I'll take it back to the same one and see what they'll do. Thanks everyone for the replies.

Problem Solved! Took it to the shop and they raised it much higher. There is now just about a 1 inch clearance between the pipe and the black bar. Thanks for the suggestions everybody.
