Valentine 1 and Savvy connection
FYI.
The SAVVY connection module for the V1 triggers the car alarm. I was reading the manual today and came across the alarm functions and one cause for tripping it is if something tries to access the diagnostic port. Thus confirmed when I used the V1 with SAVVY. The SAVVY connects to the diagnostic port and allows switched power to the radar detector as well as reading the vehicle speed for auto-mute. I was trying to figure out another issue with it and the car after speaking with Valentine by phone. The laser detector gets triggered by the cars displays, so may have to turn off the laser detector in the unit. It does not appear to be trigger by the cars radar systems as I first thought. The laser is mainly the rear laser detector being triggers. Valentine Help recommends just putting tape over the rear sensor and leaving the front active rather than electronically turn off the laser detection. Now I will have to find another switched power tap and abandon the SAVVY. I'll research it further, maybe there is a work around for the alarm issue. Mike

Appears to be a common issue with the newer BMW's. So far no work around? I'll phone Valentine tomorrow. They have great customer service.

Gesture control is what is triggering the laser on the V1, both front and back by the way. there are gesture control emitters on the iDrive screen and also from overhead, so, the "simple" solution is to tape over the back V1 laser sensor and attach a paper/card at the front bottom of the V1 till it reaches the windshield, hence insulating it from the gesture control emitters.
personally, i disabled the laser from the app, until i can figure out a nice looking paper solution/tape. |

Are you guys hardwiring your V1? If so, where? Can't find spot in rear view mirror that powers off when you turn the car off.

Update: Morning drive, the laser was going off almost continuously. I was driving into the sun this morning, as usual. Last night was driving after dark and no laser false alarms.
The sun and the particular windshield must be the cause. I am going to call valentine again today and see if they have a fix. Someone on another forum posted that there was a firmware update or something on the V1 to adjust the laser detector or something. Mine has the latest firmware as per Valentines web site. As far as finding a switched +12v source I am just starting to investigate this. I am sad to loose the auto-muting feature of the SAVVY. The mirror tap thing is done by many but that does now switch off with the car, and the detector will stay on. Mike

On our 2018 X5, I have my V1 hardwired with the V1 Direct-Wire Power Adapter that has a jack for connecting the V1 with a cable with RJ11 connectors and another jack for connecting the V1 Connection module. I then use the V1 Driver app (which connects to the V1 Connection via Bluetooth from my iPhone). This app has the ability to serve as a Savvy emulator and can also be used to lock out known stationary falses (such as door openers, etc.).
I also had to turn off the laser detection due to interference from the vehicle. My F90 M5 is due the first part of July, and I plan to use the same setup on it. |

Did you find a good switched 12 v source???
I'm currently using the cigarette lighter until I find a good source that switches off with the car. Mike

OK - my installer didn't remember exactly how he connected it, so here is what I would recommend based on my past experiences: Connect the red wire of the Valentine 1 DirectWire Power Adapter using an Add-a Fuse device https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...fFa6VD-5KNYnGc to connect to a fuse location that is switched on by the ignition. Connect the black wire to a suitable ground location.
Get a Valentine 1 Brown Out Booster and connect it in line between the main jack on the DirectWire Power adapter and the cable running to the V1. Connect the V1 Connection to the ACC jack on the DirectWire Power Adapter. We routed the cable running to my V1 along the trim on the driver's side A pillar and across the top of the windshield to the desired mounting location for the V1. Hope this helps. |

When my F90 M5 arrives in early July, I will get some installation pictures for others who may be interested. Again, I was just trying to be responsive and did not mean to offend. |

I am going to spend some time today running wire to the trunk to hardwire this thing correctly. I'll report back on which fuses are switched off with the ignition. Can be tricky to find one. I am not sure where I can mount my remote display, I usually like it to the left the steering wheels so I can hit the mute button easier. No flat surfaces. I wish valentine made a lower profile setup for that. I may crack it open and add a couple wires for another switch that I can mount more inconspicuously.
Mike

Front passenger side there is another fuse box (not mentioned in the owners manual) that has a switched fuse at fuse number 27. Rear fuse box has a paper with the descriptions and locations of the fuses.

Dam, every fuse I tested stayed hot with the car off.
Even tested the friggen HOME LINK fuse, that was hot, and the friggen home link still worked with the fuse out! WTF? Wrong fuse listing?? Mike

Turns out that the cigarette lighter does time out and shut off after 5 minutes or so.
Good enough for me! Mike

I passed the wire using a cloths hanger to fish down to beside the seat. Mike PS on the side of the dash is a panel where usually a fuse box is on all my Audi's but that panel I could not get off> Did not want to break it so I just tucked the wire under the weather striping.

Valentine is working great with power from cigarette lighter.
But.... I miss the SAVVY so much! The Auto mute is a great feature with that thing reading the vehicle speed from the ECU interface. It is tempting to code out the diagnostic port security! Mike

At request of a member, more photos of my current V1 setup. I still have not decided on a spot to put the remote display. I usually like it to the left of the instrument cluster for quick reach to push mute button but there is no good flat spot to mount it. I am trying to find a lower profile solution for the remote. I took my old one apart in my RS6 to make it smaller but did not dissect the newer one yet (newer version works with the Junk-K Fighter).
The arrows: 3rd picture shows latch to removed the panel, there are two, comes off easy, just two snaps on the left and right. 4th picture, tuck wire under this edge 5th Picture: The rubber pad comes up and you can fish the wires down to beside the seat to pull it up there. I used a coat hanger to help do this. 6th picture, COULD NOT GET THIS PANEL OFF WTF? Did not want to brake it, usually these panels come out easily, so the wire is tucked under the weather stripping, not my first choice. If you have removed one before let me know the secret! Along the windshield at the A pillar, lay the wire flat against the window and tuck it in with a firm card like a credit card or plastic pusher (something that will not scratch the glass or mar the head liner. Along the top of the windshield the wire pushes in easily. I did not want to cut into the mirror wires for the "mirror" tap which is a great choice also. I have the Dongle for the Blue Tooth connection to my iPhone if I want to run the V one software on the phone. The cigarette lighter does time out after a few minutes, fortunately. Mike
