The only way to know is to check the codes with an OBDII scanner. It could be serious, could be just a loose fuel tank cap.

+1 that's the check engine light and there could be any number of things. I had it come on recently when my spark plug and fuel injector needed changing.

Common would be the Fuel Leak Detection Module. NVLD. New BMWs have a different light for gas cap lose

I also thought it had something to do with fuel. maybe because the range is 0? I saw one clip on YouTube where some guy driving 3 series, the range is 2 miles and the emission fault is on. Unfortunately, right now am not in position to add fuel and check is this is a reason. whatever the reason is, that will be the first thing to do when I get the car, for sure

Might be the case but I doubt it.
The only sure way is to check what code it is throwing.
I have seen the mileage go negative before.
