LiquiMoly MolyGen & CeraTec
Hey all.
During my lunch break I changed the oil in the 328. I decided to treat yoself and bought 10L of the new LM MolyGen 5w40, the LiquiMoly engine flush, and the CeraTec treatment. I also installed a Dimple drain plug into the oil pan. This MolyGen is LiquiMoly's newest product, and they won me over while I had the M3, so I felt like this was a no brainier. The old Castrol only had 5000 miles on it but it was pretty dark. I imagine my driving habits and the flush contributed to this. I'm the second or third owner and even at 77k I'm afraid this might only be the fifth or sixth oil change the car has had (17k intervals, the computer says!) I drove up the 405 and womped on it for a bit. The car is definitely quieter than it was on fresh Castrol. It's smoother at idle too, but I'm not sure if it's any smoother than it was with fresh Castrol. Feels great overall. I've done a lot to the car since the last oil change so I can't say much about power. The CeraTec is supposed to take 700 to 1000 miles to work so I'll have to check my fuel economy as time goes on. My best friend is giving me shit for buying the CeraTec but I can't find any negative reviews of the stuff at all. I'm hoping for good results. Rant over!

I feel like when I've gone longer intervals in previous cars there's been a correlation between the interval and the oil's appearance and consistency. Is there not really? I've never done a 500 mile oil change or anything like that to see.

I believe CeraTec is worthwhile as recommended every 30k miles or so. Mostly I feel this way because I believe in LiquiMoly as a company and trust they wouldn’t tout snake oil.
And it’s not expensive in the big picture to spend $30 on it every few years for piece of mind. |

I also believe in the LiquiMoly product line.
I recently changed my oil and filter and used Mobil 1 5-30 and added 1 can of Liqui Moly MOS2 Anti-Friction Oil Treatment and it runs and idles smoother. Last tank full mileage was +15 miles, and +1mpg. I have CeraTec to add but I have to wait until I need to add some oil or until next oil change. I don't want to overfill it. I've run either Motul X-Cess 8100 or LM oil in all my BMWs and I love their products. The new MolyGen is interesting and handy to trace leaks I suppose. Don't see anything new about it other than that...
Ceratec or MOS2 additive is a great idea in the M3 world. A friction reducer is definitely helpful for trying to reduce the infamous rod bering wear. Guess it can't hurt in the N52 either but I haven't tried it.

Why doesn't BMW only sell cars with all the options?

I haven't reset the computer yet for this change. I'll double check, but I thought that's what it counted down from (17000) when I reset it after I changed the oil right after I bought the car.

According to this thread: www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1021833#/topics/1021833 The cars oil change interval is based on location. |

There is no "fixed" oil change interval. I feel like a broken record.
There is an upper threshold for KMs or days, whichever comes first. That just establishes a baseline. Then, data from actual use (startups, hot/cold cycles, driving conditions, and of course the oil quality sensor) adjusts that down (its very unlilely you would ever reach the maximum threshold first). Modern synthetics can *easily* do 10k miles in an N52 before needing changed. Let us not forget that we have (or had) users here who have followed the OCI indicator since the E90 was new and have over 300,000 miles with no issues. Most of our mechanical hypocondriacs are freaking out or selling if they are near 90,000 miles - they wont even be around in 10 more years to see that they were wrong.. Me, i dont even go by miles since I drive less than average - I change it once a year regardless of miles. The default "time" interval is a maximum of 2 years, so even if you drove 5k a year you would still have to change it then. Last edited by hassmaschine; 05-24-2018 at 11:50 PM.. |

Interesting. When I got my E90 it used to say 24k, but at some point they revised the intervals and now it's every 12k or 2 years.

No matter what I change my oil every 5k miles. I know these cars probably don't need it but Im just used to it from having a turbo car.
