hi all...my 440i has ext. folding mirrors - but bit surprised to learn that they are entirely manual in their function i.e. they don't fold up automatically when the alarm is activated, or open out when you get in etc.

is that right? could it be coded in some how?

just a bit annoying having to remember to push the button to fold the mirrors every time i park and subsequently push again when i get back in.

my previous 2011 citroen c4 was automatic as was the 2015 civic type R i had...just surprised the bmw's isn't.

It can be coded. I believe it’s normal. I had to have mine coded.

I'm surprised that it's not default behavior in Europe. In America it's mostly pointless since our roads and parking spots are so big. It might also have to do with cold weather vs. warm weather countries. You wouldn't want the mirrors trying to close if they were frozen.

Must be coded in. Mine is set to auto-fold on key fob lock/unlock.

I have exterior folding mirrors on a European 2017 420d Gran Coupe M-Sport Auto.

I had the same concern when I first took ownership.

I initially used the switch on the inside of the drivers side door to open and close the wing mirrors. I don’t use that switch now since I was quickly informed that:
1. holding the lock button on the key fob for about 2 or 3 seconds will lock and fold in the wing mirrors, and
2. unlocking the car with the key fob with a simple click will unlock the car and unfold the wing mirrors.

I haven’t had any custom coding done (although I’m tempted if only to save from having to hold the lock button for 2 or 3 seconds).

Yeah this is the default for Euro models. Here in the States it has to be coded AFAIK.

I have mine coded when I installed after market Comfort Access system, the mechanic did it for me, I was worried it wore out more quickly and break much sooner, my mechanic told me it breaks more easily if someone hit it from behind while walking along the car.

Yep, that's correct.

But, once coded you can hold the unlock down for that same few seconds and it'll auto roll down all your windows and sunroof. That's a nice touch in the summer when you're headed back to your car and wanna let all that heat out of the cabin.

Most US cars with power side mirrors give the owner the ability to configure their behavior. BMW withholds this ability in the 3-series for reasons nobody on this forum has been able to determine.

yes we have big roads but you should know better that even tho we have big roads we probably have the worst drivers in the country...

There are some really bad drivers in Irvine, you're absolutely right. But it's usually the type of driving where I don't fear for my rear view mirrors. It's more along the lines of worrying about getting run over crossing the street or sideswiped by someone using their phone. At least pretty much everyone has good insurance here.
