Sun/moonroof or Slicktop?

There have been threads that discuss this issue, but no numbers to tell how many are going in each direction.

I am surprising myself a little here, but I think I will go with the moonroof, since I can't get the CF roof installed at the factory.

I haven't had one in a while, and they're really nice in the spring, fall, and winter months.

Moonroof is nice to bring some light to the cabin, and has the added advantage of being a spot where a suction cup mount can be fixed for in car videos if you're into that sort of thing.

Wow. I expected there would be a bias toward slicktop based on previous general comments, but not this lopsided. Currently 25-6 in favor of slicktop. Interesting follow up question then: If you were buying your M2 used, would the fact that it had a sunroof make you walk away?

I want a sunroof, but not badly enough to pay extra for it. So slicktop it is for me. If it were free, I would go for the sunroof.

Simply a value proposition for me.

Understood. But the value prop of adding $1050 when you are already spending $60k seems like a bit of a thin argument.

Depends on your situation I guess. For me that $1050 is not worth it for the handful of days out of the year I would use it, the fact it is harder for me to get in the car with a helmet which I do often for autoX, the weight gain it adds higher than I would like, and the want to put that money into something of more value like the CF roof or the exhaust. If it came with it stock, I might have just dealt with it.

Different strokes for different folks

I gotta tell you.. during heat waves like weve had here recently, I keep my sliding moonroof cover closed, and the moonroof itself cracked open in its 'tilt' position, and with AC on, the cabin cools off so much quicker than with it closed.. For this reason alone its worth getting it.

I always thought that it adds weight that's why I preferred the slicktop

I get the whole helmet thing if you are a tall driver. But for most of us average-height males under 6ft (I’m 5-10), I’ve never had an issue with fitting into a sunroof’ed car with my helmet on.

When the 2002 was new, the sunroof was a rare (and expense for its day) option. Now it is a sought after option on that car.

In the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s you pretty much could not buy a new BMW WITHOUT a sunroof. Now slicktop cars from those decades are more desirable.

Today the perceived performance advantage of the slicktop is all the rage. And many cars are ordered without sunroofs for all the reasons cited above. I suspect in 30years when M2C’s are the 2002tii of the 2030’s and 2040’s, the rare sunroof’ed cars will be the most collectible.

That is certainly something to consider. The pop up feature also aids airflow on days when you just want to open the vents for some fresh air but do not want all the extra noise of cracking the windows open at 80mph.

Just keep the windows very slightly opened, it will do the same thing.

Yeah, I am 6'3, which is why I couched my answer as an opinion and not a statement of fact. But I agree that if your short, maybe you don't care.

As to your trends comment, you may well be right. I do appreciate that this may all be a trend.

Time will only tell.

I agree, I think not only will it cost $1050. but the resale may not be any different. My big concern is that down the road the car might actually be worth less with a moonroof. However living in a place like SoCal couldn't be a more perfect climate for it. I still might change my order, I use the moonroof in my M235 almost everytime I drive it.

It's not really the total cost, but rather usage versus cost. To me, no sense in checking boxes just because the cost is low.

That makes sense. I guess having driven cars with sunroofs for so long, it's hard for me to imagine having a car without one. Resale definitely will be a consideration.

Garage List
Pro‘s:
- light in the cabin
- fresh air
- potential emergency exit

Con‘s:
- relatively expensive
- less headroom
- does not look nice on light colors (black patch on roof)
- lots of extra weight (at worst possible location)
- potential issues (water, noise)
- might complicate potential cf roof installation

On the ride to the dealer to place my order i finally decided against it because of the light hockenheimsilver and the extra weight. If i‘d ordered BSM i had taken one.
