Thoughts on quad exhaust?

I've been contemplating quad exhaust since I got my M40i a couple weeks ago and then found this on Instagram.

I've never been much of a fan of rectangular/ square exhaust tips on pretty much any car that I can think of so I'm not in love with the exhaust tips on the M40i's but I don't hate them.

I find circular exhaust tips to be more aggressive as far as sports/performance variant cars go. Coming from an F30 335i I would have been happy with dual pipes (keeping black) again.

Now I know quad tips are an M car thing and God forbid I would never have done that to my old 335i but we M40i owners could probably agree that they are more than a little deserving of them. (Also I mostly like to use the logic that if a macan s can have them, my M40i can have them lol)

Anyone else feel the same way?

In black chrome like that they look relatively subtle, almost OEM. Definitely not offensive, if you like them then go for it!

Personally I like the subtlety of the standard exhaust, but then I’ve also gone for fully debadged...

You’ll likely catch a lot of flack for attempting to LOOK LIKE you have the upcoming X3M, as that will have essentially the same exhaust as pictured. Both the original and this exhausts look great in my opinion.

I also prefer the quad exhaust look... my SQ5 has it and the macan I almost bought did...

Do it... I’m tempted and will be googling the company.

ACS also do quads but I think you need their diffuser/bumper to fit.

This looks badass and I'd do it in a heartbeat. X3M stares or not. I've thought about quad exhaust since I purchased mine a few months ago. I figured it'd be awhile before a diffuser was made that would be able to support it. This with black tips is perfect. I was thinking of changing over to the Armytrix quad black exhaust at some point. I do like the sound of it too. See it here...this isn't quad exhaust but you get the gist of the look/sound.

I prefer the sound of it at the 45 second mark...a little lower pitch.
I will definitely consider doing this when I do the Dinan. X3M owners can stare all they want. Once it is sitting at 450+hp/torque, it's worthy to have quad exhaust.

I agree with you on all counts and glad to see a lot of us feel the same.

I can only imagine how amazing that would sound on the M40i!

I like the quad tips on the M40i.
What options do we have to find some?

Look cool - but yeah, if those are what's going on the X3M I'd be a little self-conscious about it looking like I'm trying to make it look like I have the M.

Separately, does anyone know what kind of wheels those are? And maybe if they're available in the US? I like those a lot.

I get what some are saying about "trying to look like you are driving an X3M. But people change up their cars all the time. If you're really going to be that much of a purist, then we should not have the M all over half of these cars. You have MB doing C43 and 63, both with AMG on them etc. Enjoy your car your way. If you pay for it, so be it. Now if you put quad exhaust and removed all badging just leaving the M on it, or even changed it to look like the X3M badge and put wide fenders on etc...at that point, you can do it, but why not sure spring for the real thing if you're dropping that much coin on it?

They make the car look very purposeful! I like the black chrome look too. I’m sure you won’t be doing any silly rebadging, so when X3M along soon it won’t be a problem. Do it!

Reviving an old thread. Is it possible to swap the exhaust tips or do I recall that they are welded to the exhaust and thus must be cut off and replaced?

My X3 is a lease so trying to minimize any permanent mods to the vehicle... Thanks!

It would require cutting and welding/clamping.

Don`t know much about exhaust welding, but could the originals be easily re-welded on to return the lease I wonder?

Easily by someone experienced at welding, yes. But do you really want to pay someone to weld tips back on before you return your car?

Not really... chances are I won't return the lease, however. Most likely between 6-12 months away from lease maturity my dealer will buy it back from me with positive equity so that I can get something else. Lease return is always the fallback though...

Chances are they won't even notice. All the lease returns I've seen were just a quick walk around checking off any body panel damage and tire depth. If you don't want anything welded just have someone cut off the stock tips and use clamps for the aftermarket ones. You could always just clamp the stock tips back on, they don't even look underneath the car on lease returns anyway.

I'm just a tad bit late to the party, but I'm having my SS quad tips installed in a few days and came upon this conversation during one of my google searches...

My two cents as follows:

MSRP on X3 M40i: $60,000 (382 HP | 4.4 sec 0-60)
MSRP on X3 M: $73,000 (473 HP | 3.9 sec 0-60)

$13,000 Difference (That's a lot of cash to me)

I leased a 2020 BMW X3 M40i which I recently converted to a lease buyout, since I love the car so much, and obviously, with the car market the way it is, I have tons of positive equity.

After I officially owned the car, I started tinkering with some low-cost upgrades that would result in as much power and speed gains as reasonably possible.

So far, I've done the following:
  • VRSF High Flow Catted Downpipe
    BMS Performance Billet Intake
bootmod3 OTS Stage 2 E30 Octane (Engine Tune)
xHP OTS Stage 3 (Transmission Tune)

Doing just those 4 mods has transformed this vehicle into a whole other experience, giving me:
  • 500+ HP
    0-60: 3.3 sec
    1/4 Mile: 10.9 sec

I use Dragy (like everyone else) to calculate those times. I don't have the exact HP number right now, because I haven't had a Dyno session since installing bm3 Stage 1 - I was at 425 HP at that point.

I know Sport Displays aren't accurate, but I can tell you that I max out the HP gauge, which my tuner set to 560 max. I seriously doubt I have 560 HP right now, but I know I'm 500+. I need to get back on the Dyno to see the current numbers - I'm just waiting for availability right now, but I will report back.

To sum all this up, I would estimate my total high-performance upgrade investments to be around $2500-$3000 total. So, for less than $3k, and only 2 bolt-ons, I was able to increase the power of this M40i to the point that it will blow the doors off any stock X3 M - and I'm still on the stock turbo!!

To me, this sounds like a no-brainer if you're looking for luxury + performance. I just saved myself $10k.

Bottom line - If I'm running low 3's and high 10's, damn straight I'm putting Quad-Tips on my M40i. I do not try to hide the fact that it's an M40i, quite the opposite. I'm proud that it's an M40i and I saved $10k.

I'm not trying to make my car look like a true M car, I'm simply trying to improve both the look and performance of my $65k luxury BMW. To say that quad-tips are "reserved" for some other car is ridiculous. That would be like saying, I shouldn't take advantage of my B58 and increase the power of it because extra power is reserved for a true M car lol.

The fact is, the B58 is a monster and is capable of big, big power, and we have the right to take advantage of it.

Your car is your car - You're free to do with it whatever your heart desires.

Maybe someday I'll buy a true M car when I have the budget for it, but as of right now - I'm absolutely in love with my X3 M40i - it's a total beast with my current upgrades. I can't imagine what it will feel like when I eventually upgrade the Turbo and HPFP.

The B58 is no slouch, but mod for mod you aren't saving $10K unless all that matters is straight-line performance, especially once resale time comes around. That said, I totally agree that people should do whatever they want to their own car.
