Nissan GT-R uses NA V8 instead of TT 3.8l in GT500 series

I'm staring at the mag "Turbo" I picked up at the airport for no reason.

It writes: "GT-R purists will no doubt point out the GT500 R35s aren't proper GT-Rs. Super GT rules prohibit the use of all wheel drive so the GT500 cars are all rear-wheel drive. Nissan also elected to keep the tried and true VK45-based, naturally aspirated V-8 in service..." Based on the wording, it appears they could have used the 3.8l TT?

Appearently, the GT-Rs dominated the season opener, their closest follower, a Lexus SC430, 25.5 seconds behind.

Nissan isn't sure in regards to the durability of the VR38 under race conditions...

But, this is older news...

The debut of the production Nissan GT-R remains one of the hottest happenings in the automotive world this past year, but the return of the GT-R to Japan's SuperGT series is of equal importance. We've already seen what the new racer will look like as it gears up for its assault on the GT500 class, and today, Nissan finally released all the technical details about the SuperGT competitor. Let the bench racing begin.

As rumored, the GT-R will be powered by the VK45DE V8 that's been successfully campaigned in the 350Z over the last two years. The naturally aspirated mill produces 500+ hp and well over 376 lb.-ft. of torque. The 4.5-liter sends power to a six-speed sequential gearbox and on down to the rear wheels. Nissan opted for the V8 instead of the production GT-R's twin-turbo'd 3.8-liter V6 because the new mill is still too green to compete in the upper echelon of motorsport and the torque output isn't up to GT500 standards – something that's key to competing in SuperGT.

Thanks for that link. Not surprisingly, the Nissan GT-R race car looks much better than the production version!

Those GT500 GT-Rs are serious. Noone can keep up, kinda like the C6Rs in GT1 series for a few years. I can't wait to see more of these GT-Rs in action.

I was at the Sepang F1 track the past weekend for the Malaysian round of the Japanese Super GT race. The GT-R came in 1st and 2nd... was hounded all the way by a NSX before it developed a braking problem. 3rd was also a NSX. Will post some pics of the race weekend in another thread later.

The GT-R in the Japanese Super GT isn't homologated for the road, so it doesn't qualify for the ALMS GT1 series. Think E46's V8 M3 GTR.

The GT-Rs in the Japanese Super GT are serious machines. They outrun the best Europe can come up with in the series. However, there isn't much relevance between the GT-R racer and those on the road.

I don't think actual european teams race though, am I wrong? It's different when all the support for the euro cars are japanese teams. The japanese seem t have extraordinary pride for their cars and their cars only.
